Part Time Finance Manager | Nottingham | 15-20 Hours Per Week

That was the key message that we took away from meeting with the Director of Finance to take on this Finance Manager brief. The organisation are a charity, but, different to many others you'd think of when you hear the term 'Charity.'

The way they go about creating an experience which the students love is amazing. They truly want to create a fantastic place for students to reach their potential and get the most out of their time at University. It's all about ensuring the student environment is unrivalled, and collaborating with both the University and the thousands of student volunteers to make it happen.

So, what makes this different? Well firstly, it's not all about getting the bottom number of the P&L to be as high as possible. It's about what they can do with their income to continue making the lives of their students better, and better. This could be better supporting our students to work with the University in improving their academic experience, improving training on student welfare and mental health, providing more tailored activities for international students, or it could be re-vamping Mooch Bar. It could be almost anything and over the years the ideas coming through the door from students and the elected Officers have been fantastic, you never know what's coming next!

What does the Charity do?
  • Represent and support students:
    • Create opportunities to share and air views on academic life and the wider University experience, creating improvements wherever possible.
    • Encourage students to get involved and share their views in their democratic organisation.
    • Provide a comprehensive advice service when students have academic, legal, financial and personal problems.
  • Create opportunities to students:
    • Provide a huge range of social, cultural, sporting and recreational activities working through the Committees of over 300 Societies, 70 Sports Clubs, and a wide range of other student communities.
    • Encourage forums for discussions and debates, and opportunities for personal development.
    • Facilitate over 4000 volunteers to take part in community projects.

Through the trading company, they run retail shops, a bar and coffee shop, a print shop and numerous events. Their annual financial turnover, for the charity and trading company combined is in excess of £11m annually and growing.

How would the hours work?

It's up to you to an extent. The hours are 15-20 per week, and you can split these how you like, 3 full days, 5 short days or something in between. They are looking for the right person for the job and can have good flexibility for the right person.


Operational Finance
  • Head the operational finance function, jointly responsible for 6 direct reports ensuring an effective, responsive and proactive service is provided
  • Ensure internal financial controls and records are maintained throughout the organisation in accordance with UK legislation and accounting best practice
  • Complete and deliver operational information/payments to HMRC, National Statistics and other Government and regulatory bodies as required
  • Ensure the Union operates in line with relevant VAT legislation, calculating and submitting the quarterly and end of year return
  • Identify and oversee the organisations payroll and pension arrangements particularly in relation to auto-enrolment

Management & Statutory Accounting
  • Prepare monthly management accounts, complete variance analysis and commentary packs for the Senior Leadership Team
  • Responsible for the statutory accounts process including full preparation of the accounts, supporting papers and overseeing the annual audit
  • Lead the quarterly forecast and annual budgeting cycles, working closely with department managers and the Senior Leadership Team to coordinate and challenge plans
  • Monitor capital expenditure and maintain an accurate fixed asset register for the organisation
  • Complete investment appraisal of new business opportunities
  • Support staff and student groups in financially evaluating events and planned activities including their VAT implications

  • Qualified Accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) with substantial previous experience in role at a similar level.
  • Highly personable and people focussed manager with experience of leading a financial operations team
  • Competent in preparation of management accounts, board packs, forecasts and budgets
