Full Time
Based in Northamptonshire my client's Special Purpose Machinery division has emerged in recent years as a major player in the bespoke capital equipment market working on some stunning projects in the automotive, food and light industrial sectors. They have quickly gained a reputation as the 'go to' design and assembly facility for high ticket value, complex machinery often used in visual inspection, testing or manufacturing settings. They have experienced more than 25% growth in the last year and as part of that growth require additions to the team, including a talented Service Engineer.

The Systems Service Engineer is an important part of the team acting partly as an interface between the design teams and the clients on site. Initially and during the first 6 months you will be mainly office/plant based in Northamptonshire developing an understanding the bespoke product, and assisting in the build, machine development and commissioning. You will be interacting with PLC software programmers, 3d Mechanical Design Engineers and Electrical Design Engineers as well as other stakeholders in testing, sales and project management. It is a tight knit team who work collaboratively towards delivering projects on time and within budget. It is key we hire a pro-active PLC/Machinery Service Engineer who will not just react to instructions but think for themselves, be able to interpret subtle improvements required from client liaison and be confident to portray ideas to the design teams in a helpful manner. As time develops the role will involve a larger degree of site-based work (95%+ sites are in the UK) where you will need to utilise a range of generic engineering skills related to PLC, mechanical and electrical. The key skill would be PLC servicing including interrogation and possibly modifications. Responsibilities include:

·Machine build, assembly and development

·Technical liaison with customers and internal technical stakeholders

·Field wire build to the company's standards

·Maintain accurate records of mechanical changes

·PLC interrogation and modification

·Mechanical plumbing

·Develop and coach juniors and apprentices coming through the business

·Site work involving servicing and occasionally commissioning

So we are seeking engineers that are probably apprentice time served, or perhaps educated to diploma level, with some years experience AND HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO A RANGE OF TECHNOLOGY AND MACHINERY - not only in a single site single employer maintenance setting. In particular engineers with a good overall feel for special purpose machinery and 'everyman' skills will definitely draw our attention. Key skills would be : good PLC generalist (different PLC platforms - more the better) including fault finding and service; mechanical fitting; worked with different special purpose machinery; general knowledge of robotics (Kuka, ABB, Fanuc, Yaskawa etc); any machinery or controls experience in automotive, FMCG or pharmaceutical sectors; machine build; familiarity with modern manufacturing techniques; and indeed confident communication skills including to customers on site. Punctuality, reliability, positive mindset, attention to detail and a good sense of humour are all important qualities for the role.

Whilst this is a PLC/Machinery "Service Engineer" role we believe this to be an exciting hybrid role linking what the design teams output to the customers' ongoing product development requirements. So if you have both PLC and some mechanical fitting skills and feel you have an interesting background relating to machinery, manufacturing and robots then we would very much like to hear from you.
