You will be advising policy clients on statutory and common law framework for range of housing related issues and delivery of the Departments key strategic objectives relating to the condition of housing and housing regulation, delivery of new homes across England, and reducing homelessness and rough sleeping. You will be working as part of a team of 8 lawyers. You will be line managed by a senior lawyer in the team who will supervise your work. The team is highly collaborative and supportive.

A lawyer with a good background in housing law would be suitable for this post whether in private practice, local authority or third sector.

Experience in at least some the following areas is required
  • Private rented sector housing - regulation of private sector landlords, assured shorthold tenancy regime and possession procedure Housing Act 1988, HMOs and selective licencing, enforcement of standards under Housing Act 2004
  • Long leasehold - knowledge of how long leasehold regime operates e.g. covenants for repair, service charge provisions and regulation, ground rents, rights of enfranchisement under Commonhold and Rent Reform Act 2002 etc.
  • Social Housing - role of the regulator, housing associations, local authority tenancies, right to buy
  • Housing supply - Grant funding, procurement and state aid
  • Homelessness - local authority statutory duties to homeless and rough sleepers
  • Judicial Review, Public Sector Equality Duty, European Law

An ability to learn quickly, understand the issues arising in relation to public law and give carefully considered and balanced advice on risk is key to success in this role.
