MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
There are various duties and responsibilities central to the role and these will assist you in reaching your full potential:
  • To work as part of a team delivering high quality transport planning, modelling and technical reports, and (where necessary) engineering designs / drawings;
  • To produce all outputs in accordance with the Company's management systems;
  • To develop and maintain an effective network of contacts;
  • Supervision of staff, checking of design calculations, drawings and outputs prepared by others;
  • To keep abreast of industry best practice and new developments in own area of technical expertise;
  • To assist in setting and maintaining technical standards;
  • To comply with the Company's safety and IMS procedures;
  • To review and approve work prepared by others.
  • To perform your role as a Principal Transport Planner / Engineer, you will also be expected to demonstrate several competencies, as detailed below:

PERSON SPECIFICATION
  • Degree qualified Chartered Engineer / Chartered Transport Planner in a relevant discipline, or an Engineer with lower qualifications but a minimum 15 years relevant experience;
  • Shall have a proven commercial awareness;
  • Have the drive and self-motivation to continuously develop your skills;
  • Be able to demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and to be able to build and develop relationships, both internally and externally;
  • Be able to demonstrate developing and maintaining an effective network of contacts;
  • Ability to apply technical knowledge in analysing problems and creating solutions;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a strong attention to detail;
  • Ability to work on your own initiative and motivate others;
  • Be reliable and have a responsible attitude to work.


COMPETENCIES
Business & Financial Management
  • Application of project costing principles
  • Application of project budget control requirements
  • Knowledge of Divisional and Company financial management and performance monitoring
  • Detailed knowledge of WiP calculation and management requirements
  • Application of debtor control procedures
  • Maintain the required level of utilisation
  • Assist with the pricing of work within the parameters agreed by the Directors
  • Business Development
  • Winning repeat business from existing clients by performing well on their projects
  • Generating new sales with new clients
  • Knowledge of the range of WIE capabilities and wider Group services

  • Plan and personally manage projects in the office
  • Ensure time sheets are submitted promptly
  • Support relevant Directors in the effective management of projects
  • Monitor projects using Agresso data to identify and control potential cost overruns
  • Undertake WiP reviews for those projects for which you are Project Manager
  • Invoice promptly
  • Monitor debtors and assist credit control to recover payments when required
  • Prepare and submit claims for additional fees when required
  • Ensure adequate briefing of project teams and adherence to the IMS
  • Assist in managing the deployment of resources in the office

Technical
  • Ensure that technical performance standards are met on all projects
  • Ensure that you maintain an awareness of and contribute to the technical development of your specific discipline
  • Lead technical work in your areas of expertise
  • Ability to produce good, reliable work with minimum supervision
  • Ability to manage and supervise site visits/fieldwork
  • Ability to write clear, concise reports
  • Ability to listen to and take on board constructive guidance
  • Manage the training and career development of staff, including the development and provision of internal courses/seminars
  • Provide expert technical support to projects run from other offices

  • Build strong and constructive relationships with counterparts and Directors within and across the wider Group
  • Promotes team morale and encourage cooperation, collaboration and team working
  • Act as a mentor to staff and provides constructive feedback on performance
  • Identifies training needs and provides support and encourages continued professional development

  • Ensures full compliance with the Company's Health and Safety Management system
  • In conjunction with Directors, appoints and retains high quality staff
