Role

The overall purpose of the post is to support a range of engineering provision. The post will involve supporting and maintaining engineering laboratories and workshops - predominantly relating to mechanical engineering and thermo fluids. There is also an expectation that the post holder will be able to engage in the maintenance and fault diagnosis of equipment, where possible, leading to problem resolution where external expertise is not required. The post holder will be expected to be able to support academic staff in the development of laboratory and workshop practical activities, and also provide support and supervision of students who are undertaking these activities.

The post holder will also support engineering research activities within the subject area - providing support for researchers and a research laboratory.

The post holder must consistently apply a practical working knowledge and a high-level skill set associated with mechanical engineering.

It is also a requirement of the post that the appointee is able to work flexible hours including some evenings and weekends to support University open days and other events.

Duties and responsibilities

•Maintenance of engineering laboratory and workshop facilities - particularly those for mechanical engineering and thermo fluids. It is desirable that support can also be provided for electrical/electronic laboratories.

•Maintaining stock of consumable resources

•Monitoring the resource timetables with responsibility for student access to facilities, including timetabled and non-timetabled access

•Liaising with all academic staff requiring use of facilities for teaching purposes to ensure that their requirements and appropriate access are addressed

•Support the delivery of research activities requiring practical support on-site and off-site, working in liaison project research leaders and researchers

•General overview of health and safety and ensuring the use of safe working practices

•Excellent skill levels in the use of a broad range of laboratory experimental equipment and workshop equipment and machinery

•Diligently monitor and manage the engineering laboratories and workshops to maintain high standards

•Work with confidence with large or small groups within the laboratory and workshop environment

•Liaising with other technicians in the Faculty/University.

•Mentoring and assisting other technicians as required.

•Maintaining inventories of equipment, including their security, in the laboratory and workshops and scheduling maintenance and service of equipment as appropriate.

•Participate in appropriate staff development and updating

•Any other duties, commensurate with the post, which may be required from time to time by the Dean of the Faculty.

Occasional Duties

•Assisting with internal projects, Open Days and interview preparation

•Supporting student projects - such as the Formula Student project

•Assisting with external events and outreach liaison activities (STEM events).

Skills and experience

HND/degree and/or higher degree or industry experience

Maintain engineering laboratory resources - particularly for mechanical engineering and mechanical fundamentals experiments

Maintenance of laboratory resources or willingness to learn how to support thermo-fluid experimental equipment

Maintenance of engineering workshop facilities - including manual tools and machines (e.g. milling, turning)

General upkeep of laboratory and workshop facilities

Interpret complex technical and theoretical ideas into practical outcomes

High level skills in a broad range of experimental equipment and resources

Offer technical assistance broadly across the Faculty and university

Support the development and delivery of practical activities to support academic and research staff

Support students working in the laboratory and workshop environments

Support the management and academic staff as and when required

Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to teamwork

Ability to think technically and strategically with reference to future development

Ability to plan, priorities and organize own work / resources to achieve agreed goals; experience of multi-tasking
