Based in Livingston, ESS's client comprises of a group of European companies engaged in the design, development, manufacture and distribution of analytical systems, life science equipment and laboratory instruments with operations dating back to 1920. Now part of a global multinational business, they are setting up and looking to aggressively expand a new research and development operation based from Scotland, supporting group companies and product families across Europe and Asia.

Ongoing commercial success means they now need to make the key hire of a Junior Software and firmware Engineer with embedded software experience.

Reporting into the Senior Software Engineer, the Software and Firmware Engineer will contribute to the development and testing of scientific instrumentation and laboratory products. The role will require the ability to fit in well as part of a team, whilst also being capable of working independently.

The key responsibilities for this role include:
  • Capturing specifications, then subsequently developing code, testing, debugging and releasing accordingly.
  • Writing supporting documentation detailing code architecture, function and purpose.
  • Collaboration with Electronics Design Engineers to ensure harmony of hardware and associated coding.
  • The role will primarily be focused on embedded firmware (with an expectation to work on relevant software programming as required).
The relevant candidate will have a Degree or higher in a Computer Science / Software Engineering / Electronics Engineering discipline (Candidates without formal qualifications, or with relevant science/engineering degrees who can demonstrate relevant experience will also be considered). Candidates will need some experience of commercial or industrial software / firmware product development to high quality standards. You will have some experience across areas of software / firmware development - from gathering requirements and writing specifications to testing and debugging, and experience of writing firmware in C, within RTOS and bare metal environments.
