We think and work globally - we don't just say we are one firm; we act like one firm right across the world. We work wherever our clients need us. This is how we define ourselves, not by reference to where we have offices. Cross-border work isn't just what we do, it is what we excel at. We understand what it really takes to work across different legal systems and commercial environments and to bridge language and cultural gaps.

We aim to add value in everything we do - we are passionate about helping our clients succeed. We use our experience and creativity to help clients make judgements and achieve their goals. In everything we do, we seek to make a real difference to the communities in which we operate.

Location Overview

The Freshfields Global Centre provides both business and legal services to the firm. Our services are delivered in a way which supports the global nature of our firm and our clients, enables our fee earners to deliver exceptional service to our clients and to do that in a way which is efficient and effective. Our Centre in Manchester is the first site to be established in the emerging Freshfields Global operating model. Our aspiration is to establish further sites in the US and Asia-Pacific in the coming years.

Function Overview

Responsible business (sometimes known as CSR, citizenship or sustainability) lies at the heart of the firm and its strategy for success. In the words of the senior partner: "the way we do business at Freshfields reflects who we are and what we stand for. We don't just want to advise our clients well, we want to do so in a responsible and sustainable way."

Our responsible business strategy [link] focuses on (i) the way we work (ii) how we engage with clients around RB and (ii) how we make a positive difference to the communities we touch, focusing our efforts on providing access to justice and access to opportunity.

The Responsible Business team is responsible for developing and delivering our strategy in respect of the external-facing aspects of responsible business, developing and delivering our environmental strategy and working closely with our HR teams to ensure a responsible working environment for our people.

One of our flagship programmes is the Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship Scheme. This was devised to address the disproportionate underrepresentation of black men from less privileged backgrounds in large commercial law firms and the City of London. It is a UK-wide scheme aimed at exceptionally talented first year students at UK universities studying Law, and in a small number of pilot universities, other courses too. In memory of Stephen Lawrence, the Scheme was launched in 2013 by Freshfields, working with Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon, OBE.

Now in its seventh year, the Scheme has assessed over 400 candidates and offered 69 Scholarships. The 2019 cohort of 14 scholars were selected in May 2019 and begin scholarship activities in July 2019. Many scholars have gone on to accept training contract offers from Freshfields or join other prestigious City organisations. Applications are made by universities on behalf of exceptionally talented demographically eligible students, with candidates also submitting a two minute supporting video. Successful applicants then attend a two day assessment centre at Freshfields in London, before final scholars are chosen. Scholars receive a contribution towards study-related costs, work placements during university holidays, an alternative route to interview for a training contract at Freshfields, interview coaching and mentoring.
