We're looking for an experienced lawyer with corporate expertise and experience of commercial contracts to join our in-house Legal team, and help to support our business by providing expert advice and guidance that'll allow us to make effective business decisions. The Co-op Legal team is not like other legal teams. We're passionate about our customers, members and colleagues, and doing the right thing by them is at the heart of everything we do. If you can bring the level of leadership, legal expertise and drive that we need, we can offer you a fantastic opportunity to build your profile in a business that's all about people.

As a member of the Co-op Legal Team, you'll be working collaboratively with your colleagues to deliver a service that's reflective of our excellent reputation.

You'll be part of a team of experienced commercial solicitors and will get involved in a broad range of work including advising on commercial contracts, but you will also play a key role supporting the business on corporate transactions and corporate advisory work. It'll be up to you to support the Legal Counsel for corporate functions, partnering with teams across the business, particularly with the corporate development, procurement and finance functions, applying your commercial judgment, influencing skills and legal knowledge across a broad range of business situations to get great results. Our business is large, complex and diverse, and this role offers you the chance to apply yourself across a broad range of situations in a varied and ever-changing environment.

What you'll do:

*act as an inspiring leader for other lawyers, trainees and paralegals, supporting their growth and development
*become a trusted partner to Co-op's corporate functions, building strong relationships with colleagues and stakeholders across the different business areas
*take on legal projects and transactions, actively managing the delivery of work with the wider Legal team
*work closely and flexibly with other members of the team to support all areas of Co-op's business
*deliver engaging training, and present to legal and business colleagues as required
*lead by example in supporting volunteering, and similar Co-op activities

This role would suit people who have

*expertise in corporate transactions, M&A, and/or experience in a corporate advisory role
*experience of drafting, negotiating and advising on commercial contracts
*enthusiasm, adaptability and a passion to get stuck in to a variety of work, including in areas which you are not currently familiar with
*excellent commercial judgment, organisational and people skills, with the ability to effectively manage, prioritise and inspire confidence
*demonstrable technical legal skills gained in house or in private practice
*great communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence and engage colleagues at various levels of the business
*the ability to build and maintain relationships with teams and colleagues cross-functionally

Why Co-op?

Here you'll do work that matters. We're a commercial organisation with a purpose beyond profit, you'll have an opportunity to help us build a stronger Co-op and stronger communities. You'll also get a package that includes:

*competitive salary
*coaching, training and support to help you develop
*pension with up to 10% employer contributions
*annual incentive scheme
*28 days holiday (rising to 32 in line with service)
*discounts on Co-op products and services

Building an inclusive work environment

We're actively building diverse teams and welcome applications from everyone. But simply having a diverse workforce is not enough. We aim to build an inclusive environment, where everyone can contribute their best work and develop to their full potential. We celebrate our differences, and recognise the importance of teams reflecting the communities they serve.

We can make adjustments to our interview process according to your needs. And we offer a flexible working environment so you can adjust your hours to suit your personal circumstances. You can find out more about Co-op people policies at coop.co.uk/peoplepolicies.

As part of your application you'll need to complete an online assessment. It will take you around 12 minutes to complete this test.
