Five Education are supporting a Somerset-based alternative education provider in their recruitment for a full-time assistant head. A qualified English teacher would be ideal but a strong candidate with a background in primary teaching who is confident in their skills would also be ideal.

This role has a 50% teaching commitment alongside other SLT duties. You will be driving forward improvements to the English and Literacy curriculum, setting a solid foundation in place which will make the planned expansion of this small setting much smoother.

You will be line managing three teachers, and will ideally have experience in this field. You will need to be able to teach small groups/classes across KS2 - KS4. Some of the students will not be working at the expected levels due to their needs and some have a history of broken or missed education.

The students have a variety of needs including Speech, Language & Communication Needs (SLCN), Autism, Complex Needs and behaviours that challenge. Someone with SEND experience and great classroom management skills would be well suited to working with these students.

The pay for this role is either UPS 2 with 2 SEND points or between L1 and L4, depending on the candidate. In a temp to perm case, the rate of pay is £150 - 250 per day.

Responsibilities and duties:
  • Working full time, permanent from September 2019
  • Teaching English across KS2 - KS4 in small groups
  • Line managing 3 teachers
  • Supporting the head teacher to develop the school moving forward, both in an academic sense and in the community
  • Helping to develop an outstanding curriculum to benefit each individual pupil
  • Setting targets for improvement alongside the Deputy and the Head Teacher
  • Developing important relationships for the school - this includes other schools, the wider community and of course the parents and carers
  • Assisting in training and supporting the other staff members to develop their skills

Essential Criteria
  • QTS with recent teaching experience in the UK
  • Ideally, you will need to be a driver with access to a car due to the location
  • Ideally an English specialist, but a confident and experienced teacher from primary or another subject may be considered
  • Ambitious and passionate about children's learning
  • Will have high expectations of other staff and the pupils
  • Outstanding communication skills, this role will require communication with other staff, governors, pupils and parents
  • Confident to lead a team
  • Confident in the use of technology within the classroom
  • Line management experience
