A very exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Mortgage Underwriter/Underwriting Manager to join and lead the existing underwriting team within our Operations Department.

As we approach the second century serving our local communities we are undergoing a business transformation and are looking for an ambitious experienced underwriting specialist to apply their skills and knowledge to manage new credit risks for mainstream and other residential property lending segments, including more complex and larger loans.

The successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring the mortgage applications team deliver outcomes aligned to the Corporate Plan objectives and Policy requirements, through the delivery of robust personal underwriting and processing routines and delivery of a consistent service to primary and secondary stakeholders. They will also need to demonstrate they have the necessary values which drive the behaviours and standards we admire most at the Vernon: authentic, personal, empowering.

This is an outstanding opportunity for someone who already works to very high standards, who wants to play a major role in growing our mortgage book in line with our risk appetite and who is already in/is seeking a senior leadership role.

The Role:

The Mortgage Underwriting Manager role will be responsible for leading a team of underwriters and mortgage processors in the delivery of efficient and effective processes within the end to end mortgage process.

This will include:
  • Being a subject matter expert and point of reference for a team of experienced underwriters.
  • Making it easier for internal and external Mortgage Advisers to do business with the Society.
  • Making underwriting decisions within a personal mandate and for larger cases jointly with the Director of Operations and Chief Executive.
  • Exercising a strong knowledge of credit risk and reward and commercial acumen in the management of new approvals or declining applications.
  • Providing effective narrative and end to end MI reports for the Leadership Team, Credit Committee and Risk and Compliance Committee.
  • Deputising for the Director of Operations in Credit Committee.
  • Collaborating with the Intermediary and Branch sales teams whilst maintaining independence of decision making.
  • Ensuring effective relationships and communications are maintained with customers, Introducers, valuers, solicitors and other key business partners.
  • Demonstrating strong subject knowledge of MCOB and PRA/FCA rules in relation to new lending, illustrations, regulatory reporting.

Desirable Skills and Experience:
  • Educated to degree standard or possess similar level industry qualifications.
  • CeMAP or similar level qualification.
  • Minimum 3 years underwriting experience with own mandate in a first charge lending environment.
  • Ability to lead, develop and motivate a team.
  • Understanding of efficient workflow processes and strong approach to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritise workload for self and team and deliver within deadlines.
  • Resilient and calm under pressurised situations.

Package:
  • £40,000 - £50,000 p.a. (depending upon skills and experience)
