Brewster Partners are currently working with a manufacturing business as they look to recruit a Mechanical Section Engineer.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Determine and allocate the engineering resources and materials needed to satisfy the operational and engineering requirements of the plant. This must be achieved in line with the Company Asset Management Framework, utilising the relevant processes in order to optimise and improve the plant's availability for production.
  • Devise and develop planned maintenance and inspection schedules and ensure that they are implemented to meet statutory, quality and engineering requirements.
  • Provide Technical and Engineering expertise to Production Management and Engineering staff to resolve plant engineering problems and developments.
  • To ensure that plant, departmental personnel and contractors operate within and comply with company policy and statutory Health, Safety and Environmental legislation.
  • To ensure safety standards in the area are maintained and safe working procedures are implemented and adhered to at all levels. Reporting any accidents and near misses, to improve the Occupational Safety of personnel.
  • To clearly implement and demonstrate the required approach to process safety requirements in the area of responsibility, including MOC processes etc.
  • Monitor and control expenditure on spares, materials and labour to keep within agreed budgets.
  • Identify and assist in the preparation of capital and revenue schemes, resulting in the continuous enhancement of engineering and production performance.
  • Organise and manage the training and development of the Mechanical elements of a multi discipline engineering team and production personnel to provide a safety conscious and technically competent workforce.
  • Monitor and improve Industrial Relations within BBR, advise on local negotiations and make recommendations on the appointment and performance management of Staff and Industrial Grades. Implement agreements in order to achieve Department standards and develop a continuously improving workforce in a Total Quality environment.
  • Negotiate contracts, organise and control specialist contractors providing both on and off site maintenance and services, refurbishment and modifications. Ensure that such contractors are competent and are adequately informed of the job requirements, arrange permits to work, agree access and safety procedures and to ensure such requirements are adhered to.
  • To lead and co-ordinate investigations, identify root cause and implement solutions to any problems occurring within the area of responsibility.
  • To monitor KPIs for the area of responsibility, identify any deviation from target and implement corrective action at the appropriate level, to include coaching of Team Leaders and Craftsmen to achieve these aims.
  • To carry out Safety and Housekeeping Audits on a regular basis to encourage improved performance.
  • Responsible for team's compliance with requirements regarding thorough/conscientious recording of plant history (INFOR & PRIME) to demonstrate that statutory obligations are being fulfilled and to facilitate the process of continuous improvement.
  • Engage in the development and failure reduction activities.
  • Manage and develop Engineers and Craft teams to satisfy current and long-term Business objectives. To ensure the team achieve their full working potential through ongoing updates, appraisals, 121's and PDPs, addressing any knowledge and skills gaps that may be in evidence
  • Performance managing any craftsman not contributing to the overall effectiveness of the team - use Performance Management documents to support improvements.
  • Develop and train the Team Leader and Engineers to a standard, which would allow delegation of responsibilities and cover when necessary.

  • The job holder will have a strong technical knowledge of mechanical engineering with a comprehensive understanding of complex hydraulic and pneumatic systems together with a good understanding of mechanical engineering principals
  • Have experience of supervising a team
  • Must hold one of the following qualifications Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent HND or HNC
  • Should have a sound knowledge of accounting, stores and purchasing systems
  • Should have a good working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and the application in a manufacturing environment
  • Effective manager with the necessary leadership skills to motivate a diverse workforce
  • Strong Drive, Motivation and Commitment: the extent to which the individual is self-starting and self-motivated and the degree and consistency of energy / enthusiasm which is committed in the pursuit of objectives and business goals
  • The post holder should have good analytical skills and the ability to assimilate, organise and analyse pertinent information for logic based problem solving.
  • Ability to meet deadlines
  • Able to communicate in clear concise manner, both in writing and orally, communicating honestly, clearly and directly, making effective use of communication technology
  • Computer literate with practical experience of SAP
  • Project management skills
