Your new organisation

This opportunity is working within the learning and skills department of Usk Prison. The department offers a range of courses and vocational qualifications for offenders serving their sentences and preparing for release. The department plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of offenders and reducing re-offending rates. There are 125 in mates that are taught by the department. There is a team of 12 teachers working in the Prison with a wide range of courses being run such as Design & Technology, ICT, Languages and Vocational subjects.

Your new role

You will work as part of a department of education professionals responsible for offering classes in essential skills to eligible offenders. This course will cover basic Literacy and Numeracy skills with the use of ICT. The role is a long-term placement of three months minimum with a likely extension beyond this at between 15-21 hours per week. You will be responsible for teaching Key Skills including Maths and English to small groups of offenders. This role will include planning, delivery and administration of courses.

What you'll need to succeed

You will hold a PGCE or PCET teaching qualification and be registered with or prepared to register with the Education Workforce Council. You will have previous experience of teaching either children or adults and be prepared to work within a prison environment. You will have a humanistic approach to teaching, be able to establish firm boundaries with learners and be assertive. You must share a commitment to safeguarding and security and have a DBS or be willing to have one put into process for the role. You must also be prepared to undergo a security vetting process required of all staff working within a prison environment.
