Canada Life UK, a leading international financial services company focusing on retirement, home finance, protection, estate planning, savings and investments, and insurance.

We are currently recruiting for a Lead Counsel (Insurance) Contractor to join our team in Potters Bar / London on an initial 9 month contract, with scope to extend.

The Lead Counsel will handle a complex workload of legal matters for the insurance division of Canada Life UK.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead legal support for the insurance division
  • Responsible for negotiating and drafting various legal documents for the insurance division including terms of business, policy terms, product literature, reinsurance agreements and documents relating to bulk purchase annuities
  • Provide advice to the business in relation to annuity, protection and reinsurance matters including FOS related matters
  • Explain new legal developments to the business and the wider legal team.

Key Relationships:
  • Executive for the insurance division and senior management across Canada Life UK
  • Risk, Compliance and other corporate support areas such as Finance and Tax
  • External counsel

  • To lead legal support for the insurance division of the business, including the provision of advice on legal issues and changing regulatory landscape relevant to the insurance division and drafting and negotiating of various legal documents.
  • To develop close relationships with the relevant Executive and senior management of the insurance division, in order to ensure that the legal support needs are fully met.
  • To manage relationships with external counsel and, in particular, manage their expectations appropriately in respect of fees and quality of work.
  • To keep the Deputy General Counsel and General Counsel updated on all legal matters concerning the insurance division.

  • Experienced PQE
  • Strong knowledge of financial services sector (with particular emphasis on insurance) and PRA/FCA regime.
  • Collaborative and a team player
  • Strong communication and drafting skills
  • Demonstrated aptitude for focused follow-through on projects and completion of tasks
  • Able to process complex information quickly and adopt a pro-active approach to self-development and learning; not afraid to take on new challenges outside current core competencies.
