International BU Controller

A multinational coffee company is looking for an International BU Controller to join their team in Dunstable on an initial 3 month contract.

The International BU Controller is a key role in the finance team who will be responsible for the accurate reporting of all International operations. The business currently delivers c.£400m of system sales with c.1,300 stores and will grow rapidly in both the short and medium term. There will be substantial opportunity for growth and development in role and the successful candidate should have the gravitas and potential to meet these challenges.

  • Responsible for the completion of their International's entire month end control and reporting process.
  • Explicit responsibility for the financial integrity of all international businesses
  • Ensure that accurate and timely management information is provided to the business together with appropriate action-focused commentary.
  • Needs to be a business partner and controller to the subsidiary/ joint venture FDs and FCs in Poland, Latvia, France, Singapore and China. Will also need to ensure that these businesses develop and apply financial and business controls in line with requirements, using Internal Audit and the Financial Control Framework as a tool in this process
  • Work very closely with the International FDs in a divisional Finance Controller capacity and provide insight into month end results as well as commercial aspects of reporting.
  • Acting as a Controller for all international Equity and JV businesses in order to ensure that FCF is implemented and followed in each of these finance functions.
  • Owning the FCF for India and MENA businesses and contributing significantly to Other UK FCFs e.g. International franchise and individual country FCFs as and when needed.
  • Ensure that International finance teams provide robust balance sheet reconciliations on a monthly basis. Full understanding of the various components of each divisional Balance Sheet and P&L. Challenge the teams on BS reconciliations and ensure integrity of accounting.
  • Performing/Reviewing Balance Sheet reconciliation for UK based International entities.
  • Provide detailed technical expertise on IFRS and other complicated accounting issues to the international FDs and their teams as well as to Finance and Enterprise teams as and when needed.
  • Responsibility to ensure that complicated accounting adhoc projects such as Recapitalisation of loans and investments for any International Business, Dissolution of entities, acquisition of new businesses etc are correctly accounted for consolidation purposes.
  • Liaise extensively and regularly with Group Tax in order to implement tax efficient processes in all international regions such as MENA, India, Europe, SEA and China etc. This would include explaining the intricacies of such schemes to Divisional FDs and obtaining their buy -in.
  • Full responsibility for performance management of External Accountants (e.g. TMF for France, GT for India, KPMG for MENA) including ensuring they adhere to stringent quality control and deadlines in terms of reporting into the business.
  • Maintenance of appropriate business hierarchies in NAV, Hyperion and other reporting tools across all international businesses.
  • Two direct reports, but with the potential to grow in the role as the workload and resourcing needs rapidly increase in line with the growth of the business.

Required Skills:
  • Qualified accountant (ACMA, ACCA, ACA) with at least 5 years PQE in Industry.
  • Strong technical knowledge of IFRS and accounting standards.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience of cross function working.
  • In depth knowledge and experience of internal controls and processes.
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills
  • Ability to identify key areas. Know instinctively when to get into the detail and when to take a step back.
  • Driven with a desire to succeed.
  • Excellent Business partnering skills
  • Significant experience of working in a reporting and control team.
  • Experience of reporting and control in a multi-site hospitality or retail business
  • Proven communication skills across functions and borders
  • Experience of managing diverse teams in remote locations.

Desirable Skills:
  • Knowledge of local GAAP in China, France, Singapore and Poland
  • Working in a team that has made strong use of a BI tool and developed highly automated and standardised reporting from it.
  • Commercial finance experience supporting an operational director or business unit.
  • Experience of international operations and of working outside the UK.
