Design and administer the physical implementation and maintenance of databases so that the right person can get the right information at the right time.

Support the seamless flow of information throughout the business, considering both backend data structure and frontend accessibility for end-users, ensuring the efficient operation of PSL's information systems

Within this role you are comfortable in giving technical advice and support to other team members and departments.

Job Description

The main tasks of the role are to:
  • Develop the PSL data environment, ETL processes, and external data interfaces.
  • Monitor database performance, implement changes and apply new patches and versions when required
  • Provide relational database support to IT customers helping with database design and development
  • Produce DBMS related deliverables for application implementation in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Work with database software to find ways to store, organise and manage data.
  • Troubleshoot, tune and optimise databases; testing and modifying databases to ensure that they operate reliably.
  • Minimise database downtime and manage parameters to provide fast query responses
  • Create primary database storage structures and primary objects once application is designed.
  • Design, administer and implement OLAP services.
  • Analyse, design and implement new database software and tools.
  • Ensure consistency of data across databases and keeping databases up to date.
  • Ensure the timely running and monitoring of housekeeping, backup and recovery utilities including allocating system storage and future storage requirements for the database system.
  • Design maintenance procedures and put them into operation
  • Enrole users, monitoring user access and maintaining system security.
  • Perform tests and evaluations regularly to ensure data security, privacy and integrity
  • Write and test recoverability plans


Essential criteria - must be clearly demonstrated on CV
  • Proven hands on working experience of database administration
  • Hands-on experience with database standards and end user applications
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of all versions of SQL Server
  • Excellent knowledge of SQL Server data backup, recovery, security, and integrity procedures
  • SQL Server DTS and SISS experience
  • SQL Server T-SQL coding experience
  • SQL Server security admin
  • SQL Server troubleshooting
  • SQL Server performance monitoring and tuning
  • Experience of configuring and administering multi-instance SQL Servers
  • Experience of managing Clustered Servers
  • Experience of developing and managing ETL processes

Also essential
  • Previous experience with DBA case tools (frontend/backend) and third-party tools
  • Familiarity with programming languages API
  • Proficient in the support and maintenance methods supplied with the software licence
  • Willing to work out of hours and be on-call
  • Good formal and informal communications ability both orally and in writing
  • Flexible and able to absorb rapidly new information / change in plans
  • Be receptive to new technology and be able to present strategies to a wide audience of both technical and non-technical staff
  • Highly innovative, self-motivated and able to work independently and within a team
  • Knowledge of other operating systems or databases
  • Appreciation of the Software Development life cycle
  • Problem solving skills and ability to think algorithmically
