Department Overview:

The EMEA tax department is responsible for ensuring compliance with all relevant laws, rules, regulations, reporting and disclosure requirements and timely payments of the correct amounts of taxes to all EMEA taxing authorities with which the Group has a tax obligation.

Purpose of the role

The EMEA VAT Manager will provide advice, support and business partner with colleagues in ensuring compliance with the VAT (Value Added Tax) laws in the EMEA and global operations when applicable. VAT covers all equivalent taxes applicable around the world including but not limited to Goods and Services Tax, Consumption Tax, Sales Tax.

Key responsibilities
  • Provide excellent business support services to the different business streams interacting with colleagues and providing support and advice
  • Ensure staff involved in the end-to-end VAT process are properly coached on indirect tax processes and procedures, and are supported in their day-to-day role (e.g. by providing checklists or through answering ad hoc queries)
  • Lead technically complex multi-territory assignments within one of the following key areas:
    • Supply chain efficiency
    • Global compliance (in conjunction with dedicated VAT compliance professionals)
  • Responsible for reviewing (preparing if required) the Group's consolidated UK VAT return, as well as oversight for VAT compliance across the Groups individual businesses
  • Manage relationship with VAT Authorities in UK and Europe
  • Work with and manage external tax advisers to obtain robust, timely and practical advice on indirect tax matters affecting existing and new business areas
  • Researching UK and overseas VAT issues such as cross border transactions
  • Partner with business teams and external tax advisors to identify new ways to create value through efficiency, automation, and optimization of tax obligations and initiatives
  • Ensure appropriate compliance and accounting procedures/processes are in place
  • Monitor legislation and communicate expected impacts or opportunities to the business
  • Update and document existing procedures and processes, and/or implement new processes where necessary, to ensure robust indirect tax compliance and reporting, fully meeting SOX type requirements where applicable
  • Oversight and support with audits and controversy as required, proactively seeking to manage and reduce risks
  • Prepare and implement the Group's 'Making Tax Digital' transformation strategy, working closely with the accounting and IT teams
Essential Skills
Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and/or law degree
  • Professional tax / VAT qualification attained from a recognized tax training body (eg Chartered Institute of Taxation, UK)
  • Minimum of 5+ years' experience providing VAT consulting services in Industry or Practice - accounting, consulting, or law firm
  • Ability to travel within assigned geographical area
  • Experience with implementing or using automated indirect tax systems and practices, for example working with Vertex
  • Preferred experience retail sales and operational environments
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with ability to interact professionally with diverse groups through various methods and communication tools
  • Demonstrate high initiative for automation and innovation

Management responsibilities
  • Clearly communicate and cascade company policy, standard operating procedures, company and legislative updates to ensure team are working in line with company best practice and business risk is minimised
  • Manage tax risks by testing and introducing strong internal controls to mitigate tax risks to materially acceptable levels
  • Maintain detailed documentation of internal reviews, which, if necessary, allows them to be raised up through the appropriate levels of management and/or the HMRC
  • In fostering a good relationship with HMRC, engage with HMRC with honesty, integrity, respect and fairness and in an effort to fully cooperate
  • Avoid unnecessary disputes with HMRC by interacting in real time as much as possible, where appropriate, seek pre-transaction clearance from EMEA Tax Authorities, and making tax compliance procedures, controls and records readily available for review by Tax Authorities upon request
  • Not to engage in tax efficiencies if the underlying commercial and economic values do not support the Group's reputation, brands, corporate and social responsibilities, or future working relationship with HMRC and/or any other taxing jurisdiction in which the Group operates
