NPI Design Engineer

Key responsibilities and accountabilities for this role include:
  • To work closely with the Operations and Marketing teams to deliver effective, innovative designs and installed solutions for global customers.
  • Using industry knowledge, participate in the development of product briefs that ensure that we continue to deliver successful, profitable products that excel in our market sectors.
  • Working in Solid Edge to produce detailed, accurate drawings and manufacturing data for manufacturing (internal CAD training provided).
  • To provide the Operations team with technical support and guidance, including Bills of Materials for estimating and manufacturing.
  • To use interpersonal skills to work as an effective member of the design team, whilst being clearly focused on achieving planned deadlines.
  • To demonstrate a clear knowledge of the design process and use problem solving skills to best effect.
  • Ability to adhere to DFM procedures and work collaboratively with the Production Engineering team, to develop products that can be built easily and at pace in our manufacturing facility.
  • Design quality into our products from the outset and follow the structured company quality procedure.

Person profile:
  • A highly capable Product Design Engineer, ideally with experience in developing LED lighting products although this is not essential.
  • Excellent engineering and aesthetic skills.
  • Self-motivated, results-orientated individual, with a positive outlook and a clear focus on high quality standards.
  • Must be reliable and be able to work at pace under pressure. The ability to be professional at all times and represent the company in a professional manner is a prerequisite.
  • Tenacity and the ability to see things through to the end goal.
  • A 'get the job done' attitude and able to work additional hours as required to accommodate the needs of the business which may include very occasional travel.
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline (Product Design, Product Design Engineering etc.)

Specific Job needs:
  • A good understanding of sheet metal fabrication, together with knowledge of extrusion, die casting and moulding processes.
  • Knowledge of LED technology for lighting including optics, thermal management and electronics is preferred.
  • An understanding of electrical principles.
  • A sound understanding of intelligent lighting control systems is preferred.
  • An ability to identify and understand relevant standards and directives.
  • An appreciation of lighting and its effect on a space or environment is preferred.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels and seniorities.
  • Good organisational and time management skills.
  • Able to work under pressure and to strict deadlines.
  • Ability to work in Solid Edge although training can be provided if required for users of other platforms.
  • Able to work as part of a strong team on group tasks, but also have sufficient initiative to work alone on individual projects.
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to produce accurate data.
  • Strong attention to detail, and a structured way of thinking and working.

This client, based in Sutton, Surrey are a part of one of Europe's largest lighting design/manufacturing groups. They are recognised as an industry leader specialising in the design, manufacture and supply of robust, highly efficient lighting products specifically for applications in; Rail transportation (both overground and underground, Custodial facilities, Secure health facilities, Social housing, Urban exterior. Due to ongoing growth they are now looking to expand their engineering/design teams.
