Our services are delivered in a way which supports the global nature of our firm and our clients, enables our fee earners to deliver exceptional service to our clients and to do that in a way which is efficient and effective. Our Centre in Manchester is the first site to be established in the emerging Freshfields Global operating model. Our aspiration is to establish further sites in the US and Asia-Pacific in the coming years. Function Overview The Finance Support function in Manchester provides centralised global support to the firm across its network of offices. Teams currently include Billing, Procurement and Management Accounting. The Billing team is an essential part of the wider Finance department of the firm and is expected to deliver an exceptional service to our fee earners and clients. The Billing function is extremely fast-paced and our role is to assist fee earners across the network with all aspects of invoice review and processing. The Global Procurement team, located in Manchester and Frankfurt, is responsible for leading sourcing initiatives, developing and implementing category strategies within the firm. In addition, the team provides support and guidance to the rest of the business with regard to supplier relationship management, spend analytics, procurement compliance and training. The Group Management Accounts team works alongside the firm's Chief Financial Officer, senior management partners and global support heads to provide the financial information required to run the business. In addition to the prompt provision of financial data and analytics, the team is expected to manage, develop and control the production of management data across the firm's local finance functions, providing them with support and guidance through continual review and development. Qualifications Role PurposeWorking within the systems area of the finance support department you will be managing the reporting team whose purpose is to provide support and improvements to the reporting functions of the core financial systems. This will involve day to day resourcing and management of the team including being the team's escalation point and subject matter expert. You will understand the financial reporting systems from a technical and a functional perspective and be able to guide and direct IT and your team. Other responsibilities within the role include planning and managing implementations whilst gauging and mitigating implementation risk.You will be using your team and your relationships with senior stakeholders to identify areas of change within the reporting area and then managing that change through to completion. You will liaise with senior stakeholders across the firm to ensure that teams are getting the most out of existing systems whilst supporting them on financial reporting best practice. You will also be looking for ways to develop the current systems to meet continually changing demands and help to define a strategy for Freshfields reporting going forward.Key Responsibilities and DeliverablesWork closely with the Head of Finance Systems and IT to develop the global finance systems reporting strategy alongside the wider Enterprise reporting strategy. Assess new developments in the marketplace assessing their suitability internally both from a Finance and an Enterprise fit;Provide input to the Head of Finance Systems into budget setting and be responsible for the budget and spend for the team, ensuring spend does not exceed agreed budget and that rules and guidelines are followed to ensure spend is minimised;Work closely with the Finance Systems Manager and his teams to ensure that the impact of change upon reporting is captured and mitigated;Ensure that the other support teams within finance systems are sufficiently trained in order to provide first and second line support on the various reporting areas and ensure there are clear escalation paths to the reporting team for 3rd line support;Provide analytical reporting support through the team to finance teams globally and liaise with other support departments with regards to financial reporting best practice. This will include understanding and empathising with their pain points and directing them on construction of scalable reporting solutions based on their requirements and the strategy of the firm;Implement small scale reporting projects from inception through to delivery adhering to and working in conjunction with IT's delivery methodology. You will also be required to be involved in bigger, cross department projects, managing the elements of the project that relate to Finance Reporting and feeding back into the overall larger project;Develop guidelines and standard procedures to the users of the reports for their efficient and effective usage. Examine and implement methods that will increase awareness of the tools and metrics in use and monitor users to ensure they work within the boundaries of standards and rules required for the operation of the firm;Analyse various requests for system enhancements, weighing up cost / benefit and providing practical solutions;Present and explain change requests to the Business Design Authority and then manage the change through the IT development, test and change process;Liaise with 3rd party suppliers, set their workload and priorities and ensure they adhere to the firm's change model;Sit on the IT Change Advisory Board (CAB) and advise on the impact of wider IT change on the finance reporting systems;Using the team you will plan and direct the implementation of complex projects to complete the roadmap, managing expectations and prioritising and managing multiple projects at one time;Will be accountable for recruitment, performance management and succession planning related to the team, conducting appraisals and putting forward recommendations for remuneration. Ensure that the team spreads knowledge and has adequate cover during absence;Act as mentor and a role model for your team members and members of other teams in less senior roles;Act as a consultant within the finance function advising as to solutions and the implications of IT and business decisions upon current systems, providing ideas for innovation and development and be an escalation point for complex business problems. Manage stakeholders at the leadership level globally;Be able to act troubleshoot and fix problems that have been escalated beyond the knowledge of your team members using your technical and financial skills;Manage risk within the Finance Systems, anticipate and address challenging situations, balancing risk and reward and exercising good judgement when it comes to escalation on issues that would leave the firm exposed or at risk.Key RequirementsEssentialExcellent financial skills including;Experience of financial systems within a professional services environment, ideally from a legal background;Understanding of the finance function processes and revenue recording system;Have a financial background (preferably qualified accountant) with exposure to accounting principles and processes;Proven ability to comprehend financial terminology;Previous experience of management information systems;Ability to investigate and explain the causality of figures reported;Excellent systems skills including;Be able to communicate with internal IT and external suppliers on technical related issues;Knowledge of practice management systems from a systems point of view;Knowledge of servers and database structures;Knowledge of systems infrastructure including multi-tiered architecture;Experience of implementing and supporting financial systems;Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills;Strong SQL skillsT-SQLUnderstanding of stored procedures and viewsPrevious knowledge of a complex relational database in a multi-user environment;Have exposure to data warehouses and olap reporting;Working knowledge of the following areasReporting Services SSAS MDX/DAXManagement & Presentation SkillsPrevious experience of managing a team;Ability to delegate and deliver work through others;Self-motivated with the ability, and resilience, to drive projects to their completion;Possess strong project management experience and have been required to operate autonomously throughout the project life cycle through to delivery;Enthusiastic and focused;Ability to prioritise and work to tight deadlines;Ability to multi task and manage multiple projects;Confident, able to lead meetings and projects;Ability to coach individual team members and create a high performing team.Freshfields is an equal opportunities employer and all applications received by the firm will be considered by the firm on the basis of their merit alone and we welcome applications from all suitably qualified individuals regardless of background.
