To provide specialist technical support to clinical teams of occupational therapists and physiotherapists at clinics in the Wheelchair and Special Seating Service and other designated locations including patients home, work, school / college or Day Centre.

The work involves the application of mechanical & bio-engineering knowledge and technical principles to assess provide solutions and assume responsibility for the designing, fitting and adjusting of specialised adaptations to wheelchairs and associated equipment to meet the clinical requirements of patients, maximising their independence, functionality, quality of life and management of posture.

Experience & Skills

Excellent all round background in general mechanical engineering disciplines at least to Higher National Certificate or Degree in Rehabilitation Engineering or MSc in Clinical Engineering or equivalent.

Registered or eligible to be registered on the Register of Clinical Technologists with the Institute of Physics and Engineering Medicine.

A specialist working knowledge of human anatomy and physiology coupled with experience in the physical assessment of patient' s


A specialist working knowledge of mechanics and biomechanics and knowledge of posture and positioning, in the relevant pathologies.

A specialist working knowledge of causes of tissue breakdown and the need for pressure measurement and management.

Knowledge and experience of Computer Aided Design with a working knowledge of Information Technology.

Minimum 3 years experience in the design and manufacture of technical equipment from market analysis and conceptual design through to technical drawing of final design, production planning, manufacture, quality control and product commissioning.

Minimum 2 years experience as a Rehabilitation Engineer within wheelchair services including the assessment and provision of specialist postural seating, Electric Powered Indoor and Outdoor Chairs (EPIOC's) and specialised powered wheelchair controls.

In relation to wheelchairs and special seating, have a knowledge of:

Design for manufacture

cost management

Consequences and limitations of prescriptions

Practical knowledge of

Use of hand tools - cutting, shaping, forming, assembling or adjusting

Machine tools - cutting,shaping

Brazing and welding techniques

·Joining and bonding - adhesives, industrial sewing machine Electrical - wiring, soldering and connecting.

Car driver with access to suitable transport.
