About the roleWe now have an excellent opportunity for a Management Accountant within STFC's Technology department, working as part of a small team. You will be responsible for supporting the Department Director and senior staff in financial planning and management of an annual operating budget of £20M with a current portfolio of 145 external projects and 30 internal projects.

The external bid process is a major part of this role with the Department submitting £24M worth of bids annually (approximately 12 bids per month).

You will be responsible for maintaining effective financial planning and control of departmental and project budgets, playing an active role in:
  • the process of bidding for and winning new projects
  • ongoing financial management of the department's projects and activities
  • performance management including budgeting, forecasting, reporting and analysis.

You will be expected to develop a thorough understanding of all aspects of departmental activities from a financial perspective and be well integrated with the department, maintaining excellent working relationships with the project managers, business management staff and the senior management team.

Further responsibilities will include:
  • advising project managers on costing and pricing project proposals
  • attending bid review meetings, providing advice on completion of bid forms and the bid process
  • setting up and maintaining budgets and forecasts for projects in Oracle Project Accounting
  • producing monthly management reports and ad hoc reports for project managers using OBIEE and Hyperion management information tools
  • supporting project managers in budgetary control and forecasting of their projects

About youYou will be a part-Qualified Accountant (ACA/CIMA/ACCA/CIPFA) or have equivalent experience (QBE).

You will have experience of working in a finance environment and of supporting in the delivery of effective budget-management.

You will also demonstrate experience of month-end processes - accruals and prepayment calculation, variance analysis etc. along with clear experience of developing effective working partnerships.

You will display high competency of ICT skills/IT systems and applications including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint with a particular focus on good Excel skills.

Any experience of Oracle, Hyperion and of working in a research or government accounting environment are beneficial but not essential.
