FMC are currently supporting a leading F1 motorsports team sourcing for a (Senior) Surface Design Engineer to further expand their specialist Model Design Team (Part of the aerodynamics department) based at the highly technical wind tunnel facility.

The role

This is an incredibly varied design role that requires you to work on the construction of CAD concept surface, wind tunnel model and mechanical projects.

Working in close partnership with the Aerodynamicists, you will be responsible for the creation of high quality wetted surfaces, this will consist of new concepts and modifying existing models. You will develop these designs into complete parametric surface models that can be assessed using the latest CFD tools. You will then progress both new concepts and the modifications on existing models into the wind tunnel model for subsequent testing. In addition, you will also be exposed to designing full size race car testing projects.

You will make a direct contribution to the development and performance with your successful designs forming a key part of the continued successful progress.
In addition, you will also be encouraged to partake in developing department tools and processes whilst also mentoring and developing Jnr staff members.
Successful candidates will possess exceptional communication and organisational skills whilst also being dynamic and above all flexible. You will also be able to demonstrate strong mechanical appreciation as well as having strong relevant production engineering experience. You must be able to thrive in a fast-paced team working environment.

The right candidate will support the department in delivering 3D creative shapes, as well as creating new and unique surface concepts, and expressing creativity via hand sketching through to full 3D CAD models

The requirements

You will demonstrate knowledge, skills or experience of the following:
  • You will be qualified to HND / Degree level or served an Apprenticeship in a relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrate extensive CAD skills and have prior experience in a Surfacing based role, ideally using Catia V6.
  • Be a strong communicator and be able to demonstrate an excellent understanding which will assist with the delivery of conceptual parametric CAD surface designs.
  • Be able to demonstrate an ability to be highly creative with a dynamic and original approach to problem solving and have a strong drive for attention to detail.
  • Possess prior relevant workplace experience in Product, Industrial, Automotive or Mechanical design.
  • Proactive and open-minded skillset is required along with a highly tuned sense of visualisation
