Andy File Associates Limited are working as a Recruitment Agency on behalf of our client with regards this permanent position.

Our client is a unique ABS and provides a range of services which include advising on employment matters, assessing the merits of employment cases, dealing with litigated cases in the Employment Tribunal and advising on settlement agreements.

We are now looking for an Employment Paralegal to join their team who has a passion for customer service and an understanding of Employment Law.

Overview of the Role

To work hard as part of a team assessing employment cases, assisting with litigation and assisting the Settlement Agreements Team. You will be responsible for handling your own caseload as well as assisting others in the Employment Law Department at their Sheffield office. You will also have additional supervisory responsibilities for their Employment Helpline and be expected to provide cover for Employment Helpline during busy times; it is anticipated that you would cover a half day when the office is open on Mondays (and Tuesdays after a bank holiday).

Key Accountabilities & Tasks

  • To manage task list/diary to plan and organise working day/week and ensure this is up to date at all times
  • To accurately identify and diarise limitation dates and ensure compliance with the ACAS Early Conciliation procedure
  • To ensure appropriate retainer documentation is sent out
  • To make initial contact with the client, advise on limitation and the ACAS Early Conciliation procedure, request any relevant documentation and take instructions in accordance with client protocols
  • To ensure correct contact details are on the file or obtained where relevant
  • To review information and documentation received to assess potential claims
  • To advise clients as to the merits of their claims and, if appropriate, request further information / consider any further information supplied
  • To provide accurate and prompt final advice, both verbally and in writing, in accordance with department service level agreements
  • To provide telephone advice to clients and their representatives
  • To advise clients on mitigation and obtain any evidence in mitigation
  • To draft schedules of loss and provided updated schedules as appropriate
  • To assist with all aspects of litigation through to trial or earlier settlement
  • To assist the Settlement Agreements team in all aspects of their work, particularly in relation to their administrative requirements
  • To maintain full and accurate client files
  • To ensure monetary transactions are dealt with efficiently and in accordance with office procedures
  • To keep up to date with the law by attending in-house training, through research, reading and attending courses where appropriate
  • To create and deliver training on Employment Law to staff and clients
  • To draft updates in the law for newsletters and bulletins
  • To attend marketing events on behalf of the firm

  • Are able to prioritise workload and take decisions in line with the role
  • Demonstrate a proactive and client-centric approach
  • Demonstrate an organised approach to handling a large volume of cases
  • Utilise a computerised case management system
  • Are able to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Are able to work with a considerable amount of detailed information
  • Are able to advise employees / claimants on Employment Law issues
  • Have previous experience working in a legal, insurance or professional environment

Technical skills and qualifications

  • You must have an excellent knowledge & understanding of employment law & the ET process
  • You will need to have strong negotiation skills
  • Be competent in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook
  • Be able to collect and assess evidence, determine prospects, provide appropriate advice to clients, and progress matters efficiently
