JOB DESCRIPTION TEACHER OF CLASSICS

This School wants the opportunity for their students to study Latin Language and Greek and Roman Culture, so that they gain an understanding of our cultural heritage and the part which the Classical World has played in the development of our language, literature and thought.

The successful candidate will be a graduate with a strong degree in Classics (or equivalent) and will have evidence of educational experience or qualifications.

Knowledge of Latin to at least A-level standard is essential.

He or she will be passionate about the teaching of Classics, will have innovative ideas, flair and their own vision of the potential of the subject Classics education. An interest in the use of ICT in the classroom and an understanding of assessment are highly preferable.

The successful candidate must be able to teach Latin and at least one of Classical Civilisation or Ancient History throughout the School, and the ability to offer Classical Greek will be an advantage. Staff are also expected to contribute in some way to the extra-curricular programme.

The Classics Department role is full time. In Years 7 and 8, Latin with the Cambridge Latin Course. In Year 8, Latin is taught in three ability sets, giving pupils of the top set the opportunity to study Greek alongside Latin. There is also a Greek Civilisation taster course in Year 8, which gives all boys some experience of the subject ahead of GCSE choices in Year 9, when Classical Greek and Classical Civilisation are also offered.

At AS and A2, the full OCR suite of subjects is available: Latin, Greek, Classical Civilisation and Ancient History. The Department regularly produces successful Classics applicants to top universities, including Oxbridge
