The Latymer Foundation At Edmonton​

The Latymer Foundation has been working with young people to prepare them for the future since its origins in 1624 when Edward Latymer bequeathed funds to clothe and educate ‘eight poore boies’ from Edmonton and entrusted trustees to carry out the provisions of his will ‘unto the end of the world’.  Today, the object of the charity is The Latymer School at Edmonton, a voluntary aided co-educational grammar school and one of the top performing state schools in the country. The Foundation holds the property trusts for the school site and premises, and manages investments and reserves based on donations and other income enabling it to improve the school environment by supporting the school where Government and other funding is insufficient to deliver the education and ethos the Foundation promotes.

The Foundation is an unincorporated charity registered with the Charity Commission and operates under its Scheme, which forms the Governing Document of the charity. The Trustee Board appoints nine Foundation Governors to the School Governing Body. The Trustee Board comprises a mix of School Foundation Governors (not all Foundation Governors are Trustees) and several additional Trustees, appointed as the Foundation deems necessary to discharge its duties and provide proper governance for the Board.  

Chair

The Foundation is looking for a new strong and dynamic Chair to prepare it for the future during a period of change for the Foundation, increased accountability for Charities and pressure on finances in the education sector, helping to balance the beneficiaries current need with reserves for the future of the Foundation. The successful applicant will chair between four and six Trustee Board meetings a year and will be expected to attend strategy meetings with the Chair of Governors and the Headteacher at least three times a year, as well as attending events and meetings at the School to represent and speak on behalf of the Foundation.

Person Specification

We are looking for experienced applicants, who show

  • solid experience of chairing meetings at Board level
  • knowledge and experience of governance or management
  • leadership ability
  • integrity, strategic vision and good/independent judgement
  • a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to their duties
  • ability to take decisions for the good of the organisation and it’s beneficiaries
  • good communication skills
  • tact and diplomacy
  • independently minded and open to the views of others
  • an ability to work effectively as a member of a team and bring differing viewpoints to a consensus
  • an ability to recognise and manage conflicts of interest

Desirable experience

  • a wider involvement with the voluntary sector
  • knowledge of Charity law trusteeship and best practice
  • knowledge of education governance and finance
  • legal background and experience
