The group chief engineer is responsible for leading the group and factory engineering activities to establish and maintain safe, compliant and effective engineering operations that continually develop the company's asset base to meet the near and medium term business objectives. This includes health and safety, technical, environmental and operational performance.

Key responsibilities:
  • Develop and deploy an Engineering Performance System at our factories that will drive continuous improvement across our balanced agenda & ensure improvements are sustained
  • Provide functional leadership, coaching and support to the Engineering community, including capability assessments and development plans
  • Develop and deploy a sustainable maintenance management approach which optimises asset performance and supports delivery of the business plans
  • Ensure engineering statutory compliance
  • Develop and sustain the health and safety, good manufacturing practice and environmental compliance levels for our process assets
  • Establish operability study processes e.g. HAZOP, FMEA etc
  • Effective Business Continuity plans established
  • Proactively contribute to product development through the application of best available technology and automation to create efficient and sustainable manufacturing process
  • Establish an Engineering forum to share engineering best practice, to promote the exchange of learning and identify improvements for the Group
  • Promote the sustainability agenda across the engineering community to reduce environmental impact
  • Leads negotiations and the selection process of outsourced services and parts suppliers and other external service providers at Group level and provide guidance of standards at site level
  • Overall oversight of the risk registers held at each site and ensure mitigation action plans are in place and appropriate

Essential experience:
  • Food industry experience
  • Multi-site engineering leadership experience
  • Familiarity with latest engineering technologies and best practice
  • Experience of implementing operability studies e.g. HAZOP
  • NEBOSH certified and proven track record of leading an engineering department
  • Experience of creating a lean enterprise culture with a professional continuous improvement qualification e.g. six sigma
  • Computer literate with working knowledge of Microsoft office
  • Project management experience
  • Able to influence strategically and persuade tactfully to obtain desired outcomes within a matrix organisation structure and work with cross functional teams
  • Operational expertise in risk management and contingency planning
  • Effective problem and conflict resolution skills and proven team focus
  • Demonstrated ability to set and manage priorities, resources, performance target and project initiatives across multiple locations
  • Conceptual, analytical and strategic thinking

Preferred experience:
  • Experience of working within the meat industry
  • HND/Degree or equivalent caliber/member of a recognized professional body - IET/Mech E, ICT/Institute of Mechanical Engineering
  • Legionella L8
