Leonardo is seeking experienced communications systems engineers with extensive experience in waveform development to work on a Radio Frequency (RF) Beyond

Line of Sight (BLOS) communications link, for a satellite communications system to be installed on an airborne platform.

In early phases of the BLOS programme of work the role will be focussed largely on waveform development, whereas later phases will require supporting demonstrator construction, involving the provision technical support throughout the product lifecycle, including design implementation, integration and test, and customer demonstrations and trials. There will also be opportunities to contribute to other communications programmes of work such as the airborne inter-vehicle datalinks (IVDL).

The BLOS waveform simulation engineer will be part of the wider Leonardo systems engineering communications team developing the BLOS solution, interacting with partner organisations / sub-contractors and potential customers.

Key Responsibility Areas

The successful candidate will be responsible for the development of the simulation model for the BLOS waveform and specification of a demonstrator to support waveform developments. The successful candidate will also work with the systems engineering team across a range of technical disciplines such as RF integration, antennas, signal processing, waveforms and network engineering.

Key responsibilities:
  • Definition of simulation models for BLOS waveform
  • Technical analysis and modelling of BLOS waveform performance
  • Technical documentation of BLOS model and performance
  • Contribute to system lifecycle milestone reviews.
  • Perform technology surveys and prepare roadmaps for future solutions.
  • Perform feasibility studies on potential solutions.
  • Development of close relationships with key internal and external partner organisations, sub-contractors and key stakeholders.

Skills, Qualifications & Knowledge Required

The candidate should have greater than 5 years' experience in a communication system role.
  • Graduate degree in relevant engineering or related scientific discipline.
  • Knowledge of communication systems at the Physical, Network, Transport Layers, including knowledge of waveforms, architectures, and protocols.
  • Implementation of modulation schemes and error correction schemes.
  • Knowledge of Mathematical modelling language (ideally MATLAB).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Desirable - any of the following:
  • Experience in Software Defined Radio and Digital Signal Processing.
  • Knowledge of SATCOM Systems.
  • Knowledge of waveforms and techniques used in SATCOM modems.
  • Experience in modelling and simulation of communication systems.
  • Knowledge of current commercial RF and military communications systems.
  • Knowledge of Communication Security (COMSEC) architectures.

Intrinsic Factors

This is an office-based role using display screen equipment; working full time hours which can often be in a demanding environment, with occasional travel throughout the UK and abroad.
