A shared service is looking for someone to join their team on a 12 month contract basis.

Location: Chesham

Role: Senior Accountant

Salary: Up to £43k (based on experience)

Contract Type: 12 month contract

Job Description

The purpose of this role is to help provide a comprehensive, efficient and effective finance and accountancy service

The successful candidates key tasks will be to:
  1. Help to proactively lead the Revenue Accounting Team and help ensure that all members of the team actively work together to provide a high quality service that continues to improve and develop.

Be the lead officer providing effective delivery of the following financial services:

Revenue budget monitoring.
  • Completion of grant claims, and statistical and statutory returns

And support the effective delivery of the following financial services:
  • Revenue budget setting.
  • Final accounts processes.
  • Be the lead officer dealing with Support Recharges.
  • Be the lead officer dealing with Collection Fund accounting.

Provide financial information, advice and guidance to officers and Members.

Reporting Lines

This post reports to the Accountancy Manager, but also works closely with the Head of Finance and Director of Resources on various issues / projects.

You will be required to Deputise for the Accountancy Manager in the absence of that officer.

The post holder will help supervise the following roles:
  • Senior Accountant (Systems & VAT).
  • Accountancy Officer (+ the 3.5FTEs that report to the Accountancy Officer)
  • Accountancy Assistant (Revenue)

Responsibilities

Management

To report to the Head of Finance and Accountancy Manager on a regular basis outlining the progress in achieving the agreed programme of work, and the progress with delivering further improvements.

To help manage the staff in the Revenue Accounting Team in order to ensure that it meets statutory obligations and internal performance targets:

i. To ensure that each Member of the Team has defined responsibilities and a clear chain of line management;

ii. To ensure that each member of the Team works efficiently and effectively in dealing with the work allocated to them and the targets and objectives set for them.

iii. To regularly monitor and review the performance of individual members of staff and consider requirements for training, including the selection of individuals for relevant courses/seminars etc and the taking of action as necessary.

Personal Responsibilities
  1. Interpret figures and information from spending departments and take a central role in preparing the overall annual budget estimates
  2. Assist with consolidating the client's annual budget estimates to enable Members to set the Tax.
  3. Maintain a system of budgetary control and ensure this complies with best practice and ensures public accountability.
  4. Ensure proactive management accountancy support to service managers and directors
  5. To be responsible for preparing the Final Accounts and to take a central role in preparing the Statutory Accounts
  6. Manage the audit and inspection of the statutory Accounts
  7. To prepare various grant claims, statistical and statutory returns, financial analysis and performance indicators as required.

*Experience of working for a local authority would be advantageous.
