About our Trust

Our Trust is rated as 'Outstanding for Caring' by the CQC - fundamental to this is the way that we value and respect our staff. At every level, we value the diversity of our colleagues and actively champion an inclusive culture. We believe that everyone without exception should feel free to be their authentic self in the workplace.

We understand that work is only one part of life. We are committed to helping our colleagues achieve the best possible work/life balance. We proudly offer supportive, inclusive and family friendly employment and flexible working policies. We have a wide range of professional services and employee networks to help our colleagues be at their best - and find support if they need it.

Our Trust is already a Disability Confident employer and we are holding ourselves to account through the Workplace Disability Equality Standard (WDES). Our work on promoting equity and inclusion for our Black, and Minority Ethnic (BME) colleagues continues to be driven by engagement with the WRES (Workforce Race Equality Standard) and the WRES Experts Programme.

In 2019, we committed ourselves to becoming a Stonewall Top 100 LGBTQ+ Employer. We also support the national 'Veteran Aware' scheme and are an ERS Silver accredited Hospital who welcomes applications from all members of the Armed Forces communities.

For our patients, we do everything we can to deliver fair access to all our services. This includes providing interpretative and other services to meet the needs of disabled communities. We're careful to show sensitivity towards ethnic, cultural and religious differences. Our staff uphold these values and so help our care to get better all the time.

Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) prepares students to become one of 'Tomorrow's Doctors' by offering a totally integrated approach to the development of academic knowledge and clinical expertise. BSMS are looking to expand the clinical skills and simulation teaching posts by recruiting a second practice educator based at the Watson Building, University of Brighton, Falmer.

The School currently has around 140 students per year who undertake extensive clinical skills and assessment training throughout the five year degree programme. Students are also required to successfully complete a series of demanding final year practical Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCE's), working up to the Medical Licensing Assessment (MLA) due to commence in 2023. Due to the expansion of numbers within the national network of medical schools in the UK, BSMS are increasing their year cohort to 200 students per year.

Additional changes within the GMC Curriculum in readiness for the MLA, will require a change in approach with the main 5 year degree programme being restructured to allow the final 6 month period of training as preparation for practice. This will result in an increase in clinical skills and simulation training within the first two years of the University based training, namely Phase 1 of the BSMS programme.

Alongside the undergraduate medical education curriculum, BSMS also run a number of postgraduate medical education modules, including simulation and the Physicians Associate course. In order to accommodate overall expansion and restructuring of training, these posts will enhance existing programmes and develop new training in both the under and postgraduate medical education modules. Additional areas of responsibility will be the provision, upkeep and maintenance of clinical skills teaching resources at the Watson Building.

We are able to offer hours as a full time (1.0 WTE) or part time post (0.6 WTE). The posts are contracted by BSUH, based at Brighton University. Any NHS contractual arrangements such as NHS Pension provision would remain unchanged for any potential applicants on an existing NHS contract.

The post holder will utilise established clinical knowledge and teaching skills in a successful and dynamic medical school. BSMS has extensive clinical resources and facilities which provide equipment for skills-based teaching and simulation. We are a friendly, motivated and supportive unit which is committed to providing both under and postgraduate students with expert practical training through internal and external service delivery prior to graduation.

If you are a multi-skilled healthcare professional with experience in teaching we would like you to join our team. We would require advanced organisational and planning skills in order to continue, establish and expand skills-based teaching throughout the curriculum. Education delivery within this post involves a significant amount of administration and facilitation time, including equipment management, room set up and clear away.

You will be responsible for direct teaching and facilitation of education delivery by working with clinical educators within the medical school and wider Trust. The medical school will support an innovative approach to identify areas for expansion and further development within the curriculum to increase direct teaching exposure.

You will be expected to be educated to graduate level with evidence of additional postgraduate clinical learning and a recognised teaching qualification. You will have advanced communication and organisational skills with the ability to autonomously manage identified areas of teaching and skills-based activity within the academic year.

We will provide the opportunity for professional and personal development in a committed, supportive and motivated medical education team and the opportunity to study for further post-registration teaching certification if required.

The post holder would be required to work Monday - Friday (depending on contracted hours), undertaking office hours to match an academic teaching approach. Likely hours will be 0830 - 1630 with reasonable adjustments in place at critical periods within the curriculum such as revision and final examinations (OSCE's). Workload planning and annual leave would need to be in collaboration with the second post holder, to mutual agreement in order to ensure cover across the academic calendar.
