It establishes the Group's accounting policies, manages and develops the Group's financial consolidation systems and determines appropriate financial controls for the consolidation and reporting of group data. The team provides accounting guidance to the Group's businesses in respect of acquisitions and disposals and other specialist technical accounting areas and manages the accounting for the parent company and the investment and treasury companies located at the head office.The Group reporting team is supported by the Pearson Financial Services (PFS) Financial Reporting & Control team and works closely with the Pearson Reporting Centre of Expertise (RCoE). Both of these teams are based in Belfast. Main purpose / objectives of the role:Responsibility for UK and parts of rest of world technical accounting issues and various aspects of the Group's external reporting including specific responsibility for financial instruments and foreign exchange. Provision of advice in relation to group restructuring and M&A transactions. Management of the Group's head office and treasury back office accounting function with emphasis on maintaining a strong control environment. Oversight of Treasury results and how these are reflected in the Group's reporting. Working with the Treasury department on various process improvement initiatives. Main activities / responsibilitiesPoint of contact for UK and rest of world (outside Americas) technical accounting issues. Providing guidance and support to local teams and Global Business Services (GBS). Responsibility for financial instrument accounting under IFRS 9 and IFRS 7. Providing guidance to Treasury and operating companies on group policy and accounting treatments. Preparation and analysis of financial instrument related balances for the Group. Responsibility for foreign exchange accounting under IAS 21. Providing guidance on functional currency and inter-company lending. Preparation and analysis of the impact of foreign exchange. Monthly management reporting (including forecasts and plans where relevant) for Head Office companies. Day to day accounting for Pearson plc, treasury, investment and holding companies. Supervising the work of the head office team based with GBS in Belfast.Provision of guidance and analysis to the statutory accounting team for head office legal entities and co-ordination of head office audit. Participation in tax and treasury restructuring projects including debt issuance, funding and hedging transactions and M&A structuring. Liaison with group companies, tax and treasury teams to ensure accounting treatments are understood and reported correctly. Assisting in the Group's material transactions review process (Large & Unusuals) with specific focus on UK and head office and rest of world issues.External reporting disclosures including financial instruments and parent companyRegular review of head office and relevant technical accounting controls, ensuring compliance with Sarbanes Oxley requirements.Input to development of the Treasury System (eTC), ensuring the maintenance of adequate company accounting records and procedures. Ensure that all general ledger balances in respect of financial instruments (and other transactions recorded on eTC) are supported by underlying eTC reports and their financial impact is in line with Treasury department expectations. Qualifications Strong academic background and a recognised accountancy qualificationPQE including relevant experience of complex financial instruments and multi-currency consolidation Significant exposure to UK plc reporting including detailed knowledge of IFRS and other reporting requirements. Good knowledge of financial control processes and systems preferably some exposure to Sarbanes Oxley requirements Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent influencing skills, including the ability to communicate complex technical matters to non-technical peopleExperience in supervising and managing staff. Preferably experience of managing teams in different locations or time zones.Planning and organisational skillsComputer literate with excellent spreadsheet skills A team player with good communication and interpersonal skills
