The Opportunity

Are you a Safety Case Engineer with a track record in managing a team to deliver safety cases for nuclear or other high hazard plant and operations?

Could you set expectations and ensure quality delivery of safety cases in a technically challenging environment?

Can you bring clarity and clear thinking to complex safety justifications and present these in a way that engages an organisation? If so, we would like to hear from you.

We are seeking an experienced Safety Case Team Leader to drive our safety case production activities. You`ll be at the forefront of shaping and implementing our approach to proportionate safety case development, and contributing to the improvement of our systems, people and processes.

Key accountabilities will include:

-Co-ordinating expertise from within and from external specialist service providers, to deliver safety case activities, and engage and respond to external peer reviewers.

-Managing a small team of safety case engineers in the development and maintenance of a portfolio of safety cases

-Influencing and communicating the desired culture for safety case issues including integration with technical change across UKAEA

-Developing our safety case procedures in line with modern standards ensuring they reflect best practice across the nuclear industry

-Seek relevant contacts and influence across the nuclear industry in order to enhance the effectiveness of UKAEA safety case activities and the organisation`s standing in the wider community.

The portfolio consists of safety case activities focused on radiological hazards, for: (i) existing facilities such as JET and MAST; (ii) new build facilities such as H3AT; (iii) contribution of technical expertise to other relevant work programmes within the broader fusion communities. Where safety cases are established, you will manage the assessment of modifications and provide advice to designers on the safety implications of their proposals.

At the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) we strive to make everyone feel welcome and fully supported. We`re always interested in versatile applicants from diverse backgrounds and we actively promote equality among our staff. You`ll be part of the Central Engineering team, some of whom work flexible, compressed or part-time hours - we`d be happy for you to do likewise if that`s important to you.

Our Mission?

Nuclear fusion, the process that powers the Sun, could play a huge part in our carbon-free energy future. UKAEA is the world`s leading nuclear fusion research establishment, with unrivalled science facilities and exciting technology development platforms. Our mission is to deliver the ground-breaking developments that will underpin tomorrow`s fusion power stations. In doing so, we will place UK industry at the forefront of the future global energy economy.

Knowledge skills and experience

You will strengthen and complement our existing team with experience that includes:

-Leading the production and maintenance of safety cases for high hazard plant and operations

-Managing a highly technical team including matrix management of ~10 professionals, including contractors, and responsible for motivation, performance and project completion;

-Extensive experience in Hazard Identification, including as a HAZOP Chair and in Hazard Analysis;

-Extensive experience in performing Design Basis Analysis, Probabilistic Risk Assessment and ALARP Justifications;

-Experience in Failure Mode, Effects and Criticality Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis and Event Tree Analysis.

Your professional training should include safety case writing.

Your education should include a degree or equivalent in a science or engineering discipline.

You have endorsed your professional progression via membership, or even fellowship, of a recognised professional body. If not, we`ll support this in your new role.

As a key part of our safety case engineering team, you`ll be a role model.

Therefore we care about behaviours and you should:
