Highways England have awarded telent the contract for the operation and management of NRTS2 (National Roads Telecommunication Services), NRTS is the network of communication and control that Highways England uses to monitor and manage England's motorways and major trunk roads, it is a critical component of national infrastructure supporting the country's 4,400 mile strategic road network.

The contract includes a major technology transformation programme in addition to general maintenance and management of the network; The transformation programme comprises of 11 technology projects, including the introduction of new wireless and IP CCTV services, new management systems and the next-generation upgrade of all technology, this will ultimately enable Highways England to prepare for the future and enable safer roads, more efficient delivery and a better road user experience.

Role Profile:

You will need to reside in and around the Stoke area to be considered for this position.

This role is for a national installation & provisioning engineer, working on the Highways England contracts carrying out installation and provisioning activities on the NRTS network.
As part of the project and scheme team you will be requires to use a wide range of technical skills which will be key to overall project success.
The role is predominantly external works, specifically roadside on high capacity roads, which including such factors as adverse weather and environmental, working within traffic management closures and travel daily sometimes nationally this can also induce switching of tasks on an hourly or daily basis. In addition, there is an element of office-based activities including computing work.
The role demands a high level of accuracy as there are a number of activity and deliverables that need the attention to detail approach. These are testing roadside, result combination, technical drawing updates to mention a but a few, but all training will be provided to the successful candidates. The candidate will need to demonstrate the capacity to be able to data capture on an continual basis. The Project and scheme team work within strict time scales, so the engineer will need to be ability to adapt to changing environment.
Within the role all engineering tasks are fully determined by strict procedures and guidelines however, individuals are empowered for problem solving and associated decision making when required and escalate outcome where necessary. Works in a safety critical environment and requires ability and authority to stop any unsafe work activities. Has knowledge and authority to suspend work which presents a risk to the network services.

Typical Deliverables:

* Experience or knowledge of the NRTS network topology and the active components.
* Experience of working on large scale telecommunications networks and an excellent understanding of the operational environment and their constraints
* Fibre loop jointing with large capacity fibre cables
* Undertaking general installation and testing on all fibre and copper (armoured/un-armoured)
* Understand partitioning documentation
* Experience of managing logistics
* Cable break locate, and rectification works
* Cable locating using cable detection equipment
* Ensure that all work undertaken is done in accordance with telent's, QEHS processes
* Working nights & Weekends if Required

What we are looking for from you:

* Copper / fibre cable preparation, (10pr,20pr,40pr) (12F,24F,96F, 144F)
* Installation and termination of varios cable types into cabinets
* Passive and Active equipment installation, Cat5e and 6
* Install Copper and Fibre cable up to 500 meters
* Commissioning and testing.
* Good engineering knowledge of motorway communications technology
* Proven experience of installing new technology in a live service environment
* Find solutions during installation and commissioning activities if so required.
* Installation and provisioning of motorway communication
* Installation and commissioning of Networking components including DWDM equipment, switches and routers
* Relevant HNC qualification or solid relevant experience within an electrical engineering/telecommunications field.
* Knowledge of Communication Networks and experience of working with Transmission and IP networks
* Full UK Driving licence
* Ability to travel/ stay away overnight when required.

Qualifications Required:

* Can demonstrate they can understand technical Fibre and Copper drawings
* City & Guilds 2391-52 Inspection & Testing or equivalent
* City & Guilds Communications Cabling and Networks (3667) 01/02/03/04
* Site Supervisory safety training scheme (SSSTS) or (SMSTS).
* C+G 2382
* Experience of Local Authority or Highways Agency structure
* Experience working roadside in cabinets and chambers, preferably working on the HE network
* Exposure to LEAN and ITIL principles and Business Improvement
