About Us:

ZSL (Zoological Society of London) is an international conservation charity working to create a world where wildlife thrives. From investigating the health threats facing animals to helping people and wildlife live alongside each other, ZSL is committed to bringing wildlife back from the brink of extinction. Our work is realised through our ground-breaking science at the Institute of Zoology, our field conservation around the world, and engaging millions of people through our two zoos, ZSL London Zoo and ZSL Whipsnade Zoo.

Overview of Role:

The Indicators and Assessments Unit at the Institute of Zoology is offering an excellent opportunity to gain experience with one of the UK's leading conservation research organisations. The candidate will contribute to a collaborative project with WWF to develop the Living Planet Index.

The Living Planet Index (LPI) enables conservationists and policy-makers to determine whether targets to reduce biodiversity loss, such as those set by the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Millennium Development Goals, are being met. The LPI is a global biodiversity indicator based on population trends of vertebrate species which are stored in the Living Planet Database (LPD livingplanetindex[.]org). These data need to be regularly updated and expanded to provide the broadest possible scope for population analysis. We are therefore looking for someone to join our team to focus on important database improvements.

The main duties and responsibilities will include:

* Collecting abundance data for the Living Planet Database through literature searches and by contacting external collaborators.

* Populating the Living Planet Database with new data by extracting relevant information from data sources.

* Identifying gaps in the current dataset to inform data collection and entry.

* Improving the Living Planet Database by coding metadata and checking for consistency.

Person Specification:

The ideal applicant for this position will have:

* A BSc in a relevant area

* Previous experience of data entry and/or processing

* Good general knowledge of biology and ecology

* Interest in biodiversity conservation and environmental issues

* An understanding of why global biodiversity indicators are needed and how they are developed (desirable)

* Excellent attention to detail

* Self-motivation

* Good communication skills

* Advanced skills in using MS office packages, specifically Excel

* Prior experience of online databases and knowledge of MySQL code (desirable)

Closing date for applications: Midnight (23:59) Monday 10th June 2019.
