Junior IT Infrastructure Engineer

Basingstoke, Hampshire

£25,000 - £35,000

The Junior IT Infrastructure Engineer will assist the IT Infrastructure team in the design, development, maintenance and monitoring of the Company’s IT Infrastructure, ensuring it performs as required by the business and remains secure. The role will also help our existing IT Service Desk team in providing second line support to our staff, escalating issues to other team members as appropriate.

A successful candidate will have a flexible approach to working hours, be able to drive and own a vehicle. They will be able to work in a team, or alone on projects and must be a self-motivated, technology and solution focused individual with a can-do attitude.

Good analytical skills with the ability to recommend solutions to the team are a must, whilst keeping up to date with modern technologies so that ideas presented use the most appropriate products.

The job role may be required to work at satellite offices for short periods and support users remotely.

Key Responsibilities

  • Second line support (triage and escalations)
  • Configuration and maintenance of systems, such as:

o network switches

o printers

o backups

o monitoring systems

  • Systems documentation
  • Adhere to software licensing laws, risk management practices and compliance processes (including Data Protection)
  • Ensure business continuity, primarily by means of system health and data backups
  • Monitor the performance and health of the network, servers, external services, etc.
  • Additional duties as requested by the Senior Management during and out of business hours

Knowledge

  • Have a strong grasp of storage and networking best practices/principles.
  • Understand virtualisation (both servers and platforms)
  • Familiar with the concepts of desktop virtualisation (e.g. RDS and Citrix)
  • Deep understanding of networking, configuration and troubleshooting
  • Understanding of backup systems (both data and power related)
  • Able to monitor systems and platforms, highlighting potential issues

    • User & Security groups
  • VMware vSphere v6.x
    • VM management - start/stop
    • VM Snapshots
  • Basic Linux System Installation / Administration
  • Aware of AWS Cloud platform, previous experience a bonus
  • Networking
    • TCP/IP addressing
    • VLANs
    • Routing
    • Firewalling concepts
    • Intermediate troubleshooting skills
    • Patching/Port configuration
  • Previous VPN experience
    • Mobile user (SSL)
    • Site to site (IPSec) a bonus
