Engineering Manager - FMCG - Packaging

We are looking for a Maintenance specialist for our market leading packaging business based in the North West.

This is a key hire for the business as they look to continue the journey that they have been on for the last few years. The business actively measures key performance data such as MTBF and MTTR amongst other KPI's and has seen huge benefits from doing this.

Developing the maintenance strategy is the main driver for this position and finding new and better ways to keep maintenance pushing forward and delivering on targets.

Other important aspects to the role would be...

Providing leadership for HSE within the Engineering function and positively influence the progression of a behavioral safety and risk management culture within the company.

Strategic development of the engineering function and implementation of a pro-active Maintenance strategy :
  • Meet or exceed targets for the Engineering department including Engineering-related down time (OEE), Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) and Mean Time to Repair (MTTR)
  • Define and Implement Focused-Technician Availability and MTBF plans to deliver the targets.
  • Implement engineering best practice and support site strategy through SMS
  • Develop the continuous improvement culture within Engineering through the effective implementation and use of lean tools and techniques by all Engineers such as PDCA, Breakdown Analysis, FMEA, A3 etc.
  • Management of all Site Services Maintenance Processes and 3rd Party contractors – assuring availability to avoid Site down-time.
Continuous development of a Planned Maintenance Program that will improve asset integrity, analysing data and trends through Focused Technicians:
  • Develop Planned Maintenance program and CMMS to deliver best-in-class performance across the asset portfolio ensuring that breakdown analysis improves frequency, standard and scope of maintenance tasks.
  • Challenge PM compliance, performance and effectiveness through auditing tasks and completing post-PM analysis.
  • Improve Machine Calibration, Quality-related processes and Team understanding to reduce Customer Quality complaints and resultant Site Waste
  • Monitor asset performance to ensure all priorities are met, and any engineering related downtime is minimised
  • Analyse and understand root cause of prioritized engineering-related downtime and implement robust engineering solutions to prevent reoccurrence
  • Support technical element of all New Product Introduction.
  • Monitor and Ensure shift engineering resources complete Tier 1 actions during Shift
  • Provide progress reports and data on performance as required

Ensure that the Engineering structure is aligned to the current and future business needs to enable the team to deliver the functional vision. Create an environment through the training, coaching and effective management of people, where all employees are motivated to deliver outstanding performance.
  • Direct, Support, coach and effectively manage a team of Engineers, building better relationships with Operations.
  • Perform regular reviews/appraisals and develop individual development plans to ensure skill-sets meet ongoing business requirements.
  • Work with Shift Managers to develop and enhance the skills of Operators to operate, Clean & setup equipment to achieve the highest possible levels of operational efficiency.
Budgetary Control
  • Management of Repairs & Maintenance Budget of over £1 million
  • Monitor performance of 3rd Party Stores service Provider; minimize Stores holding but not risk site performance.
  • Select and manage 3rd party Contractors to provide value-for-money activities that are not cost-effective to do in-house.
  • Control labour Cost through effective utilization of team members, Organisational design and the management of overtime.
  • Manage Capital Engineering projects, ensuring successful completion on time and within budget limits.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to facilitate an improvement in overall business performance.
Recommended Personal Profile
Academic qualifications
  • Graduate Calibre (in an Engineering discipline) with high levels of numeracy and literacy.
Professional experience
  • Severel years’ experience of FMCG or other sectors where quality and service are a high priority.
  • Previous management experience in a lean Manufacturing environment.
  • Project Management experience
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of utilising continuous improvement tools and techniques.
  • Experience in design and start-up of equipment and installations.
  • Experience in maintenance management.
