Our client is a high quality, innovative, independent business owned by an international manufacturer and world-leading provider of productivity solutions to industry. The company, already over 200 people strong and operating in global markets, has grown significantly and is enjoying new support from its parent, encouraging inter-company trading and cross selling, to further enhance its market position. The business is looking to recruit an experienced Engineering Manager (Design) to a new role, created to provide leadership and direction to the New Product Development team, driving product value through creativity and innovation.

Working as an integral and influential part of engineering management and cross functional teams, reporting to the Chief Design Officer, this 'hands-on' role is highly visible, focused on technical risk management, continuous improvement and ensuring that innovative materials, components, products and technologies are researched, investigated and implemented, strengthening the company's position of technology leadership and supporting growth strategy.

Providing engineering management to projects within specific business units, key responsibilities as Engineering Manager - Design will include:

• Leading and developing the design team to ensure they are fully motivated to achieve their full potential
• Effective daily management of the design team to ensure that agreed service levels are maintained in a pro-active and professional manner
• Engaging, training, mentoring and developing staff with particular emphasis on the training and development of engineers within the department
• Implementing new ideas for improved products and improved product performance via the exploration and identification of new and unique materials, components, concepts and technologies
• Continually improving current product range encompassing technical performance, value, quality and reliability
• Actively participating and providing key technical contributions to projects, with a key focus on the transfer of new technologies and materials into both current and new products and manufacturing processes
• Taking a key role in new product project teams and provide evaluation of engineering design, some of which may be outside of the normal remit of the engineering function
• Assisting with, and provide specialist technical input and support into new product and component development
• Identifying and supporting development of new markets and applications for both current and new technologies
• Providing specialist technical support during customer and supplier meetings and visits
• Supporting the development of core technologies through supplier partnerships
• Providing authoritative, factual and substantive technical writing and documentation for use by the wider business
• Assisting with the development and protection of the company's intellectual property relating to technology
• Assisting in raising the company profile via the forging of mutually beneficial links and partnerships with academic establishments, trade associations and other external bodies

As Engineering Manager - Design, you will need:

• Strong Engineering Manager experience with demonstrable results in new product innovation, leadership and development of engineering teams, the implementation of best practice and project delivery
• Experience in mechanical design or related engineering leadership
• A core knowledge base in Mechanical Engineering and fluid dynamics is preferred, ideally supported by a strong competence in pressure vessel design and related approval processes. Knowledge of filtration mechanisms and the principles of adsorption would also be advantageous.
• Degree educated; Mechanical Engineering discipline or equivalent. Post graduate qualifications desirable
• Commercially orientated with a proven track record in completing projects on time and to budget
• Experienced in using Solidworks CAD system
• Ability to compose accurate technical and business documentation to a consistently high standard
• Ability to comfortably and effectively communicate at a high technical level, but also be capable of detailing and explaining complex information in non-technical terms to a wider audience
• Highly analytical with the ability to use both theoretical and empirical data to problem solve and model engineering systems
• Innovator and creative problem solver with a systematic and organised approach
• Positive attitude, strong team ethic
• Decisiveness. Ability to rationalise and make reasoned technical and commercial decisions, particularly under pressure
