We are recruiting for a Public Affairs Manager to help us campaign for change to tackle the UK's household debt problem that is harming millions of people right now.

We are the UK's largest specialist debt advice charity, contacted by over 650,000 people last year. We are working towards our vision of a UK society free from problem debt through our advice services and through working for policy change.

Based in our London office you will join a committed and successful policy, public affairs and research team. You will lead our day to day parliamentary and public affairs work and have responsibility for managing and developing our relationships with policy makers and influencers in government, parliament and other stakeholders.

We are looking for a seasoned public affair professional with an established track record and line management experience. An understanding of public policy making in Wales and Northern Ireland is desirable, as is an understanding of the not for profit or free advice sectors.

What you will be doing

We have ambitious plans to broaden and deepen our political influence to help more people in problem debt. You will lead our work to reach parliamentarians, the civil service and influencers. This role will have a focus on extending our reach in UK regions and devolved nations, particularly in Wales. You will have a key role in influencing political and private sector stakeholders to promote and uphold our vision of a society free from problem debt. Connecting the charity to the external operating environment to build understanding of debt and its causes. Raise the charity's profile and grow support for public policies on debt that result in lasting social change.

Key accountabilities

* Working with the Head of Policy, Research and Public Affairs, manage the strategic development of our public affairs activity; ensuring the charity has and maintains influential links with ministers, shadow ministers, key parliamentarians, and other individuals and organisations

* Oversee the charity's work in Parliament, devising and implementing plans to make the most effective impact and influence on the Parliamentary and legislative agenda.

* Influence debates in Parliament and build momentum for change by delivering expert briefings.

* Deliver targeted lobbying campaigns to achieve Parliamentary, regulatory and private sector action and public policy change.

* Support the development of our presence and profile in UK regions and devolved nations, particularly in Wales and the Welsh Assembly.

* Represent the charity externally, including in Parliament, and speak on its a behalf at relevant events and meetings.

Experience and knowledge

* Significant experience of working in a public affairs team, campaigns or other influencing role

* Track record of briefing and influencing senior stakeholders

* Comprehensive knowledge of parliamentary and legislative processes and procedures

* Experience of delivering innovative and creative public affairs programmes

* A sound understanding of broad social policy issues and how they relate to debt

* Experience of developing a network of relevant stakeholders, for example with the main UK political parties, government agencies, think-tanks, creditor organisations, consumer bodies and related charities

* Comprehensive knowledge of current affairs and proven political judgement

Skills and abilities

* Highly organised and able to support planning and delivery of organisational priorities

* Strong problem-solving abilities

* Able to deliver a demanding workload effectively and efficiently

* High level of accuracy, particularly under pressure

* Proficiency in Microsoft Office packages including Outlook, Word and Excel

* Management experience

As part of this role of this role you'll be required to travel to meet stakeholders, attend party conferences, other events where needed.
