Our Research & Development facility contains one of the strongest P&G/Gillette engineering capabilities within Europe and is the main R&D facility for Gillette in the world.

Your Apprentice Engineer Role

Our apprenticeship is for mechanical engineering (non-automotive)

YR1: You will be learning the basic manual skills of:

  • Milling,
  • Turning,
  • Hand fitting and mechanical assembly.

You will be 100% supervised by a fully qualified craftsperson. You will build up a portfolio of practical work and job write ups. This is a curriculum-based programme.

YR2&3: Here you will move on to the CNC machines to learn

  • Milling
  • Turning
  • WEDM
  • Rapid Prototyping

There is still 100% supervision at the beginning, but the jobs are now ‘live’ (for active projects) with an opportunity to really impact our research. This is where you build up not only your machining skills but also interpersonal skills, time management, accuracy, quality, confidence, and pace


  • Once we are happy with your skill & confidence level we will gradually let you go solo on live jobs, but always with the safety net of a mentor should you need it.
  • All corporate, machine & legislative training will be provided by us.

Year 1: of the Apprentice scheme will comprise of 1 day a week at Basingstoke College of Technology where you will gain an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Engineering, comprising of an EAL NVQ L2 diploma in Performing Engineering Operations (on site) and a City & Guilds 2850 L2 diploma in mechanical Engineering (day release at college)

The following 3/4 years involve 1 day’s attendance at college to gain:

Y2/3 an Advanced Apprenticeship comprising of an NVQ L3 Extended Diploma in Mechanical Manufacturing engineering (on site) and a BTEC L3 120 credit diploma in Engineering Mechanical Manufacturing (day release at college)

Y4/5: a BTEC HNC Eng., (day release at college)

Please be aware that due to changes in the engineering standards, the course title may change

Skills and Requirements

To become our next successful Apprentice Engineer, we are seeking candidates with the following requirements:

  • A passion to understand how mechanical things work, be a good team player, be highly motivated, have good communication skills & an ability to solve problems.
  • Genuine enthusiasm, determination to succeed, is self motivating and a good work ethic and responsible
  • Have evidence of an interest in practical or technical activities.
  • 5 GCSE’s Grade 4-9, including Science and at least a Grade 5 in Maths

Future prospects

On successful completion, you will have gained an Advanced Apprenticeship in addition to a Higher National Certificate in Engineering.

There is the potential for a permanent position with Gillette/P&G after successful completion of the apprenticeship

Things to consider

Gillette is based in Reading & has excellent transport links to Basingstoke either by train or car. Gillette does not have the ability to provide accommodation for candidates who live outside of a reasonable commuting distance.
