Management Accountant, York, £18-20ph, Accountancy, Public Sector
A British, government owned, train operating company operating from Scotland down to London. They manage nearly 10 stations in the UK and operate trains through around 50 stations.
The key responsibilities of the position are:
- To support the Business partners to ensure delivery of quality, timely functional management accounts, complete with appropriate explanations for variances to target and supporting narrative for Board Reporting.
Work with the Lead and Senior Finance Business Partners in conjunction with key business stakeholders within the business to support the delivery of robust and accurate annual budgets and periodic forecasts
Assist in the production of timely periodic reports, ensuring the information is tailored to the requirements of the end-user so as to inform strategic decision making and improve financial performance
Provide Support to ensure all risks and opportunities, business initiatives and actions are captured each period
Assist in driving the business to adopt a cost conscious culture via review of cost centre spend, and an understanding of cost drivers
Demonstrate customer focus and an excellent finance experience by anticipating and responding articulately and credibly to business needs
Develops and maintains personal networks and allegiances and seek opportunities to improve contacts internally and externally to the business
Works as a member of the business partnering and wider finance team to ensure consistency of approach and achievement of both finance and company goals
Assist in preparing supplementary accurate and timely reports as and when requested by the business that are fit for purpose and can be consistently relied upon for decision making purposes
Ensure all processes within functional remit are followed in order to maintain controls
Assist in on-going revenue and cost monitoring and provide analysis as required to justify/ support/ challenge the business as required
Work with the wider Finance team to suggest improvements within transaction processes that will facilitate more efficient management accounting. Question and challenge existing processes with a view to identifying better ways of working and of improving financial processes, policies and relationships with the customer
Ability to work on their own initiative and take ownership, demonstrating an appetite for maintaining and developing own technical competence and continuous learning
The successful candidate must have recent management accountant experience at a similar level with similar responsibilities. It is a particularly busy time for the business and they are going through periods of significant change, so the post holder will be expected to hit the ground running and act autonomously. They need to be well versed in management accounts and have strong and demonstrateable experience with the basics such as reconciliations, accruals and prepayments.
