JOB PURPOSE: To provide inclusive play and learning opportunities for all children attending the provision and to maintain a safe, stimulating and enjoyable environment. She/he will take some responsibility for curriculum planning within the childcare setting.


1. To participate in the planning, delivery and monitoring of the EYFS curriculum in accordance with the children’s social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs.

2. To supervise volunteers, students on placements and work experience in the provision.

3. To supervise the children where appropriate and to protect them from dangerous or harmful situations.

4. To share any child protection concerns immediately with the Manager

5. To provide a high level of care that will enhance the children’s general health and well-being.

6. To participate in and promote positive behaviour management in the setting.

7. To act as a key person to a small group of children and to ensure their needs are reflected in the planning of routines and activities and in tracking their progress.

8. To be aware of children’s special educational needs and work collaboratively with the SENCO to support the children effectively.

9. To keep informative, accurate and up-to-date records, including records of progress and any behavioural or developmental reports.

10. To liaise regularly with parents/carers about their children’s needs, interests and progress.

11. To attend parents’/carers’ meetings to allow two-way discussion of their children’s progress.

12. To contribute to and attend his/her supervisions and staff appraisal.

13. To attend regular team meetings.

14. To participate in partnership work with other agencies, both statutory and voluntary, where appropriate.

15. To attend any conferences, training events or meetings as identified by the Manager and to keep up to date with current good practice.

16. To adhere to the Provision’s policies and code of practice on confidentiality.

17. To adhere to and undertake the Reflecting on Quality assurance scheme

18. To perform any other duties as deemed necessary by the Manager.

This job description is not an exhaustive list of duties and the post holder will be required to undertake any other reasonable duties discussed and directed by the line manager.


Essential Criteria:

1. A minimum Level 3 early years education and childcare qualification (e.g. Pre-school Learning Alliance Diploma in Pre-school Practice, NVQ 3, or equivalent).

2. Post-qualification experience in working effectively at a similar setting.

3. A sound understanding of child development and children’s needs with an ability to plan and implement an early years age/stage appropriate curriculum, taking into account the SEN Code of Practice, child protection procedures and equal opportunities’ considerations.

4. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing. This includes the ability to establish rapport and credibility with parents and the ability to produce clear, concise and well-written reports..

5. Ability to use Microsoft Office packages effectively and to produce reports and correspondence in a professional and accurate format.

6. Ability to prioritise own work and meet deadlines.

7. Ability to build good partnership working relationships with other staff and volunteers.

11. Ability to communicate in a variety of ways and with people at all levels, and adopt a communication method appropriate for the listener or audience.

8. Pro-active, enthusiastic and self motivated.

9. Ability to remain calm under pressure.

10. Emotionally resilient and able to handle competing demands.

11. Able to work on own initiative.

12. Demonstrates professionalism in approach to work.

13. Experience of Problem solving.

15. An ability to engage positively with parents/carers in respect of their child’s. development.

16. Demonstrable and detailed knowledge of current legislation relevant to the Early Years.

Terms & Conditions

2. Hours: 16 per week or 20hrs per week term time only

3. Salary: £8.50 per hour or more depending on experience

4. Pro-rata for part year.

5. All leave to be taken during school holiday periods.

  1. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) and does require an enhanced DBS check. Applicants must be prepared to disclose any convictions they may have and any orders which have been made against them.
