Mechanical Design Engineer Optical

Prospero Engineering are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer Optical within the field of optical and lighting products to join busy design office, involved in the design, prototyping and testing of the latest optics, LED's and luminaires.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will be part of an in-house dedicated team focusing on innovative specialist design solutions, whilst our dedicated global manufacturing sites ensure we have a local presence on a global scale.

Custom design projects are an important area of the business that is growing and we have now completed a number of bespoke solutions for large multi-national luminaire manufacturers.


* Full lifecycle optical or opto-mechanical design. Work with small cross-functional teams or independently to generate new design concepts for customer applications & projects, as well as ‘in-house’ design projects

* Define & agree customer technical requirements for detailed design through to production parts

* Support sales and commercial teams during quotation planning with design work breakdowns & timelines

* Generate detailed 3D part geometries using CAD design software to aid optical/mechanical simulation

* Use optical simulation software to determine the critical geometry characteristics of new optical designs and optimize designs to meet the design specification requirements

* Carry out optical & mechanical tolerance analysis to verify key feature functions on optical performance

* Conduct design reviews, documentation of design verification studies and validation test results. Presenting results to cross-functional teams or customers

* Generate 2D engineering drawings with GD&T, conducting DFM review in preparation for tooling phase

* Creation of new parts, control and release of design data through company ERP & PDM systems

* Process design changes using engineering change process to development or released designs & drawings

* Support/lead the specification, procurement and construction of optical test & calibration equipment. Agreeing test plans, test procedures and testing of optical system when required at Customer sites

* Support cross-functional teams to resolve customer quality or performance issues

* Investigate new design methods and techniques (either independently, in teams or externally) to strengthen and enhance knowledge of optical techniques

* Carry out presentations (when required) to promote the optical design capabilities at exhibitions & shows

* Carry out internal training courses and provide material to help other departments and sites to understand new optical products and concepts

Experience & Qualifications:

* Degree, HND level or equivalent qualification in Physics or a related Engineering course with optical content.

* Previous experience in Optical design with working knowledge of Optical design software e.g. Zemax or LightTools.

* Experience of LED Lighting product design

* Knowledge of Lighting market, including industry standards and specifications

* A good working knowledge of SolidWorks.

* An understanding of injection-moulding part design tool requirements, Moldflow and mould materials.

* Ability to lead designs or work well within a team.

* A commitment to producing right first time quality designs and parts.
