Job Title: SME Commercial Underwriting Manager
Location: Ipswich
Package: £80,000 - £90,000 + bonus, package

The Role:

To lead and manage the operational underwriting function in the SME Trading Centre, applying underwriting and pricing strategy, and policies, to build technical excellence and deliver profit and income targets.

Key Accountabilities:

-Build a transformational customer experience centre for the Commercial Lines business, which in partnership with the other SME Trading Centre, deliver seamless broker service and profit performance of SME portfolio
-Deliver planned underwriting result through underwriting account management (revenue & product), financial planning, account monitoring and analysis of underwriting trends
-Responsible for underwriting governance and control of SME portfolio. Demonstrate loss ratio control by effectively implementing and monitoring underwriting controls.
-Implement & influence underwriting philosophy & strategy through relationship with Technical Centre to achieve financial objectives. Build a reputation as an SME underwriting expert working with intermediaries and build confidence in the SME Trading Centre ability through interaction with our Underwriting Technical Centre
-Set & monitor underwriting standards across the SME Trading Centre ensuring effective management and deployment of empowerment
-Lead underwriting relationships with key customers to deliver profitable growth. Build relationships with management teams across the SME Trading Centres and branch network. Action cases in line with knowledge of wider broker action plans.
-Act as a referral point and decision maker on all technical & trading issues to deliver technical excellence within the SME Trading Centre
-Lead and manage the senior underwriting team through effective performance management to continuously develop the technical capabilities of the SME Trading Centre
-Lead and manage the Operations Manager to ensure operational excellence through robust operational stability and customer service
-Create an open and honest culture across the SME Trading Centre which drives engagement, development and supports SME Trading Centre, Branch strategy to meet key KPI's. Contribute to the development of colleagues by coaching and acting as a reference point to assist in decision making
-Embrace and deliver the change programme, and adopt changes, particularly system and process led, to ensure the matrix approach across the Branch network, Schemes, Connect and SME Trading centres, are robust, consistent and unified.


-SME Trading Centre financial results including GWP, profit, loss ratio, retention, commission, rate increases and credit control
-Profitability of Regional portfolios
-SME Renewal Retention (Customer, Broker, Premium)
-Evidence of active engagement with Branch Network and Technical Centre
-Audit and Evaluate results
-IIC and Employee Pulse
-Broker feedback
-Evidence of consistently operating within SME Trading Centre empowerment
-Evidence of developing the capability of the SME Trading Centre
-Service delivery KPIs
-Evidence of robust performance management processes
-Evidence of employee development to meet capability requirements in relation to trading and underwriting.


-ACII qualification desirable
-Degree level or other equivalent qualification preferred
-Proven experience and ability to lead & motivate underwriting teams
-Previous experience of working at a senior level within a commercial insurance environment; sound understanding of insurance market and processes essential.
-Excellent relationship management skills and experience of building successful long term relationships both internal and external
-Ability to create and maintain an open and honest culture which drives engagement, development and opportunity for all employees.
-People and resource management skills, with proven experience and ability in leading and motivating teams.
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills
-Pragmatic decision maker with good analytical and numerical reasoning skills
-Experience with matrix management environment
-Extensive knowledge of the AXA Commercial product range
-Strong long & short term planning & analytical skills with proven experience of both operational & strategic planning in previous roles
-Proven experience in decision making on a wide range of technical underwriting scenarios within a Commercial environment
-Strong level of technical underwriting expertise in a commercial insurance environment
-Understanding profitability of business within the intermediary channel.
