Across the National Trust we have over 60,000 volunteers contributing nearly 5 million hours a year to support our purpose. They play a critical part in ensuring we can look after properties and places and create experiences that move teach and inspire.

The Stowe & Aylesbury Vale Volunteer Development Manager will be responsible for leading great volunteering, developing volunteer involvement and making sure all volunteer managers (paid and unpaid) are confident and capable.

What it's like to work here

The beauty of Stowe and the surrounding area has attracted visitors for over 300 years and the wider portfolio includes Claydon House, a medieval tower and duck decoy at Boarstall, Long Crendon Courthouse and Buckingham Chantry Chapel, the four latter properties operated by a dedicated team of volunteers. . The scale and scope of this flagship portfolio of properties is both breathtaking and inspirational. Along with the friendly team, this area is a great place to work with over 450 volunteers supporting our cause!

What you'll be doing

This role includes strategic and operational accountabilities and is a key part of the property portfolio leadership team with accountability to deliver volunteer growth and satisfaction. Both locally and as a wider organisation we aim to offer a rewarding volunteering experience for our existing volunteers and aim to grow the team in order to offer an even better service to our visitors.

You’ll create and lead the direction of volunteering in line with the Property Business Plan. This will include creating a great place for your team of staff and volunteers to work and develop. You’ll develop and facilitate training sessions and workshops and you’ll manage change positively and creatively and champion the values and behaviours of the Trust in all you do.

You’ll promote this professional volunteer culture, directly lead volunteers at our smaller properties and take accountability for the professional development of all Volunteer Managers within the portfolio.

Your wider responsibilities will include contributing to the overall business planning cycle and duty management responsibilities. Additionally you’ll take operational accountability for some of the smaller properties in the Stowe & Aylesbury Vale group as well as direct line management of their volunteers.

Who we're looking for

In order to successful undertake this role you’ll have:

  • A sound understanding of volunteering trends and previous ability in developing volunteering offers and programmes
  • Passion and enthusiasm about the benefits of great volunteer involvement as well as an understanding of the differences between staff and volunteers - particularly the legal framework, the approach to reward and recognition and different motivation
  • Leadership and people management skills, coaching, motivation and communication and setting strategic direction.
  • Development and delivering change programmes
  • Financial management skills including managing budgets
  • A can do attitude, and willingness to learn
  • Relationship management capability both externally and internally
  • Good written and verbal communication skills including public presentation and influencing
