Overall purpose of role

Unitemps are recruiting for a qualified Specialist 1-2-1 Study Skills Tutor to work with students on the Autistic Spectrum across Universities in the Canterbury area. The successful Specialist 1-2-1 Study Skills Tutor will provide expertise in the area of language and study skills to help students to develop learning strategies to improve their studies. Experience working in a similar setting with students who are on the Autistic Spectrum is essential. An ability to be sensitive to students’ needs and having an interest in and understanding of additional support needs is also very important. Tutors provide one to one assistance to students and work with an Individual Learning Plan which is bespoke to each individual student. An emphasis is placed on encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop their skills. Specialist support tutors are facilitators, they shouldn’t act as advocates or mentors.

Main duties and responsibilities

* To provide one to one Specialist 1-2-1 Study Skills tuition to students with ASC enabling them to develop within higher education.

* To provide bespoke sessions according to the needs of the individual student.

* To deliver study skills tuition according to Unitemps guidelines and code of conduct.

* A flexible approach to working hours is required.

* Ability to manage paperwork effectively, i.e. completing timesheets and record of sessions

* You will be expected to represent Unitemps in a professional manner, including adhering to both Unitemps and the universities policies regarding confidentiality and safeguarding

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

* Able to assess learner’s needs and devise an appropriate learning plans.

* Understands the needs, objectives and constraints of students. This includes recognising barriers to learning for students with ASC.

* Holds a degree AND a teaching qualification AND Comprehensive training in adult autism which must include: - All 5 NAS core autism online training modules (Understanding Autism; Autism and Communication; Autism and Sensory Experience; Autism, Stress and Anxiety; Autism: Supporting families) or NAS tutor-led course ‘Understanding Autism’ or ‘Introduction to autism and the SPELL framework’ or - other training, including at a HE institution, delivered by an appropriately qualified trainer (a qualified trainer from a recognised organisation/charity, or a trainer who can demonstrate a relevant qualification in autism) OR  Holds a PG Certificate in Autism / PG Certificate in Asperger’s

* AND a teaching qualification (minimum Level 4)
