Overall purpose of role

Unitemps are recruiting for a qualified Specialist Mentor to work with students on the Autistic Spectrum across Universities in the Canterbury area. The successful Specialist Mentor will have the ability to support, motivate and encourage students to develop and achieve their full potential. Experience working in a similar setting with students who are on the Autistic Spectrum is essential. An ability to be sensitive to students’ needs and having an interest in and understanding of additional support needs is also very important.

Main duties and responsibilities

* To provide one to one Specialist Mentoring to students with ASC enabling them to develop within higher education.

* To provide bespoke sessions according to the needs of the individual student.

* To deliver mentoring according to Unitemps guidelines and code of conduct.

* A flexible approach to working hours is required.

* Ability to manage paperwork effectively, i.e. completing timesheets and record of sessions

* You will be expected to represent Unitemps in a professional manner, including adhering to both Unitemps and the universities policies regarding confidentiality and safeguarding

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

* Able to assess learner’s needs and devise an appropriate learning plans.

* Understands the needs, objectives and constraints of students. This includes recognising barriers to learning for students with ASC.

* Hold a Degree AND comprehensive training in adults with autism which must include

* All 5 NAS core autism online training modules (Understanding autism; autism and communication; autism, stress and anxiety; autism: supporting families)

* NAS tutor-led course ‘Understanding Autism’

* ‘Introduction to autism and the SPELL framework’

* Holds a PG Certificate in Autism/PG Certificate in Asperger’s
