Testing & Commissioning Engineer

It’s an exciting time to join, as in 2017 CAF celebrated its 100th year, and announced plans to build a new state-of-the art assembly hub in Newport. The new assembly hub is being designed to build a range of different trains, including diesel multiple units (DMUs), electric multiple units (EMUs), trams and high speed trains.

Job Summary

As the Testing and Commissioning Engineer, you will have responsibility for testing trains and resolving any engineering issues that may arise during the Test Programme of the project. This will involve communicating with UK and overseas to enable you to fully understand the procedures. You will be responsible for the analysis of testing data and compiling technical reports and issue your findings to key stakeholders. In addition you will be leading a team of Testing and Commissioning Technicians.

The role will require frequent travel around the UK to perform the train-testing required by CAF group and the Client.


Developing Test Procedures and Method Statements to support the test program.

Looking after the installation, integrity, maintenance and fault rectification of the train borne test equipment and managing the testing contractors as necessary in accordance with procedures.

Ensuring measurement systems are documented and maintained in accordance with procedures.

Carrying out Test and Commissioning duties, including maintaining testing logs and documents and controlling tests data in accordance with relevant procedures.

Analysing test data and reporting on test results to relevant stakeholders.

Liaise with relevant system experts in Engineering to progress commissioning and type testing issues.

Record keeping

Ensure accurate records are completed and maintained in accordance with procedures in place, and work in progress is communicated to Line Managers and team members.

In addition to the duties and responsibilities outlined, you may be required to undertake other duties commensurate with your level and competence, which may result from changing circumstances, but which may not of necessity change the general character or level of responsibility to the post.


  • REQUIRED ACADEMIC SKILLS: Minimum HND in engineering discipline
  • REQUIRED PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: relevant experience in a testing and engineering equivalent role in railway/rolling stock environment.
