LOCUM CONSULTANT IN HISTOPATHOLOGY Base: YORK HOSPITAL Whole Time or Job Share – 10 Programmed Activities (with the option of two extra PAs) York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has an ambitious programme of service modernisation and a reputation for providing high quality services. We are seeking an enthusiastic Locum Histopathology Consultant to join our dynamic Laboratory Medicine Directorate. You will be joining a supportive Histopathology team of six Consultants and two Associate Specialists.

This post is a replacement permanent position following a Consultant retirement. The post combines Histopathology, Cytology (Non-Gynae) and, if desired, Mortuary duties. The work of the department is divided on a daily rolling rota, apart from Gynaecological Cytology which is undertaken by nominated individuals.

The department is not currently subspecialized, however this may change, and candidates interested in reporting two or three areas may be accommodated.

The department has recently consolidated its services onto the York Teaching Hospital site and now undertakes around 34,000 requests per annum of general histopathology from both York and Scarborough hospitals. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join and shape the service at an exciting time, given that the Department has secured capital funding for an extensive laboratory refurbishment and office space extension to take place over the next two to three years.

A bid for comprehensive digital histopathology workflow is currently under development, though digital reporting will remain optional for routine work.The laboratory is also in negotiation with vendors for a new laboratory information system, immunohistochemistry system and end-to-end specimen tracking system.

The department has close links with Hull and York Medical School (HYMS) offering interested candidates opportunities for undergraduate teaching or the development of management roles within the medical school.

Candidates must hold a medical qualification and a licence to practice registered with the GMC, hold the FRCPath (or equivalent) and be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their CCT, CESR, or European Community Rights at the time of interview. A familiarity with issues of service organisation and development would be particularly advantageous.

DBS Checks

Please be aware that all new employees starting work with us will be charged for the cost of their DBS check if it is required for the role. The cost will be deducted from your salary either in 1 payment or over a six month period once you start employment. By applying you are agreeing to this undertaking. If you are successful you will be asked to confirm if you wish to pay in one amount or in instalments. The charges are currently £30.20 for a standard check and £48.20 for an enhanced check. The level of check will be determined by the post you are applying for.

Please note that Band 1 roles, Volunteers, Bank only staff and Apprentices on the National Apprenticeship Minimum Wage will not be charged.
