Consultant Physician in Elderly Medicine with Orthogeriatrics

The Trust Boards of Luton and Dunstable University Hospital and Bedford Hospital have agreed to explore plans to merge and form one NHS Trust. Under the umbrella of the single NHS Trust, both hospitals will retain their identity and individual hospital names. All key services will remain on both sites and will be managed as single teams across the whole Bedfordshire catchment area. This will bring many benefits for patients including much improved continuity of care.
Through tremendous commitment and hard work, our Paediatrics, Emergency Care Services and Outpatient Services achieved “Outstanding” in our 2016 Care Quality Commission inspection. Similarly we had an overall rating of “Good” across the rest of the hospital. We were praised as compassionate, empathetic and exhibiting patient outcomes above the average when compared with other acute Trusts.
We are a regional centre of excellence for several key specialties including, Obesity Research, Neurophysiology, Cardiology, Ophthalmology and Cancer Services. We are a tertiary level NICU provider and one of the largest centres for breast screening in the country.

We are entering an exciting period of development within Elderly Medicine at The Luton and Dunstable Hospital. Due to new pathway development and investment we have four exciting Job opportunities for Consultant Physicians in Elderly Medicine.
This is an exciting post within the Elderly Medicine Directorate the successful candidate will work with existing Consultants to provide a comprehensive Care of the Elderly service for elderly patients across the acute and in a community setting, with a primary focus on patients admitted with orthopaedic trauma, rib fractures and head injuries. The successful candidate will be encouraged to set up a multi-disciplinary pre-op assessment clinic for high risk patients undergoing surgery.
The Trust has recently received an overall Good for services at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital following its recent CQC inspection, and was recently announced the only hospital in the country to meet all of the key targets.
Applications are invited for the above full time posts for this 650 bed acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. This appointment will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for the 2003 consultant contract (England)
The Directorate of Elderly Medicine is within the Division of Medicine, this is broken into three distinct areas, Acute, General & Elderly Medicine (Non-Elective), Emergency Medicine & Specialist Medicine (Elective). Both in‑patient and out‑patient services are based at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital.
The Clinical Directorate of Elderly Medicine is supported by 5 wte Consultants and their junior teams. We are currently going through a transition and Elderly Medicine will have two Complex Medical wards of 60 beds and a Frailty Unit at our front door within Medical Short Stay. Our Consultants also manage patients on our Infection Control ward and our Rehabilitation ward. Complex elderly clinics are provided on-site at the Luton & Dunstable with Consultants specialising in Diabetes, Falls, Syncope and Parkinson’s supported by specialist nurses as well as general elderly medical clinics. We are moving towards a hot clinic approach to support the Trust changes in delivering Needs Based Care and Integrated Care, ensuring patients are seen at the first opportunity.
The Medical Directorate has thirty-five consultants in medicine and sub-specialties together with 4 Consultants in Acute Medicine who look after the Acute Care Unit.
The Hospital has always been renowned for its friendly atmosphere and good working relationships. Ongoing developments are now enabling a considerable expansion in facilities, staff and hence services offered. The Trust has University Hospital status with UCL and the Royal Free providing an opportunity to strengthen our teaching and R&D programmes and brings a more academic environment to the hospital. Our links for undergraduate students also include Cambridge Medical School and we have an excellent reputation for junior staff training.
The Hospital has easy access to central London and the rural Chilterns. The rural areas include many attractive villages and towns within easy reach of the Hospital including St Albans and Harpenden. Excellent schools are found nearby. There is also very good access to the Midlands and London by road using the M1 or A1, or by rail to one of Luton’s three stations. A direct link using the new ‘Busway’ takes passengers from Luton Train station just 7 minutes to reach a stop within a short walking distance of the hospital. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes drive from the hospital.

Please note that all shortlisted candidates will be required to attend a pre-interview assessment process involving the completion of an on-line personality profiling assessment, followed by a 1-1 session, a written exercise and a group assessment event at the hospital. These will be scheduled prior to the interview date; all shortlisted candidates must attend these appointments.
