Working with teams across a range of technology disciplines to develop knowledge, skills and understanding, contributing to Met Office technology project and service delivery whilst also studying to gain a degree.

The Met Office operates a full range of IT capabilities to support delivery of services to our customers. These include the management of the core underpinning infrastructure services, operation of the largest UK government website and development of new products and services to meet demanding customer requirements.

The Degree Apprenticeship scheme will offer the opportunity to experience work across a range of different technology fields, building a broad level of capability before specialising in a particular area for the final two years of the scheme. This approach provides not only a breadth of technology experience, but also supports the development of a wider network of colleagues that can prove beneficial for future career development.

Individuals will be expected to build their technical knowledge in each discipline, supported by local mentors and a defined work plan. As skills develop, individuals will contribute to the wider objectives of their team through participation in office wide projects or service delivery activities.

Individuals will undergo the following duties/learning:
  • How business exploits technology solutions for competitive advantage
  • The value of technology investments and how to formulate a business case for a new technology solution, including estimation of both costs and benefits
  • Contemporary techniques for design, developing, testing, correcting, deploying and documenting software systems from specifications, using agreed standards and tools
  • How teams work effectively to produce technology solutions
  • The role of data management systems in managing organisational data and information
  • Common vulnerabilities in computer networks including unsecure coding and unprotected networks
  • The various roles, functions and activities related to technology solutions within an organisation
  • How strategic decisions are made concerning acquiring technology solutions resources and capabilities including the ability to evaluate the different sourcing options
  • How to deliver a technology solutions project accurately consistent with business needs
  • The issues of quality, cost and time for projects, including contractual obligations and resource constraints

Desired qualifications

Candidates will be expected to satisfy the entry requirements for this degree apprenticeship set by the University of Exeter. The typical offer is AAB at A-Level, or equivalent. Where candidates are awaiting exam results, any offer made will be conditional on meeting the entry requirements.

Future prospects

Many Trainee's and apprentices in IT at the Met Office have successfully progressed into valued senior members of teams. With approximately 400 IT staff on site in Exeter, we offer a very real opportunity for progression in a multitude of areas in technology.

The successful candidate will be enrolled as a Degree Apprentice on the University of Exeter's BSc (Hons) Digital and Technology Solutions programme. Through this 4-year programme, the knowledge and training gained will then be implemented within the Met Office workplace environment.

The University of Exeter programme is delivered through a blended learning model which includes:
  • 3 residentials of approximately 4 days' duration, held at the University. This will include lecture, tutorial and workshop time, as well as opportunity to meet peers from other employers
  • Online learning to be undertaken during the working week (typically up to one day per week), including online seminars, interactive activities, reading and assessments
  • Reflective practice, assessing project work undertaken in the workplace
