School Improvement Manager - Literacy Programme (Contract)
London, SW8
Are you an ambitious and experienced secondary education professional eager to drive literacy rates? Do you have the vision and passion to lead our work on secondary school improvement through programme delivery and training? If so, read on.
About Us
The National Literacy Trust is an independent charity dedicated to raising literacy levels in the UK. Our research and analysis make us the leading authority on literacy. We run projects in the poorest communities, campaign to make literacy a priority for politicians and parents, and support schools. Our mission is to give young people the literacy skills they need to get a job and lead a successful life.
One person in six has poor literacy skills that impact on every area of their life. A child without good reading, writing and communication skills can’t succeed at school, and as an adult they could be locked out of the job market. Poverty doubles the likelihood of literacy failure by the age of five.
This is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of our Literacy for Life project, an innovative programme designed to transform support for literacy in secondary schools. We’re now seeking a School Improvement Manager to join us full or part-time, working flexibly up to 35 hours per week, on a fixed-term, two year contract.
The Benefits
As well as a competitive salary (up to £50,000 per year), we offer benefits including a generous annual leave allowance of 28 days’ (plus bank holidays and office closure between Christmas and new year), and pension contributions of 8% of annual salary.
Your Role
We are looking for an ambitious and experienced School Improvement Manager from an education background to lead Literacy for Life, positioning it as the foremost national programme for raising literacy levels in secondary education.
Specifically, your role will involve:
- Managing all aspects of programme development and delivery
- Meeting targets for the number of schools engaged in training
- Working with colleagues to ensure the programme has a sustainable business model
- Leading a team of four, including two Consultants based around the country

- A strong track record as an education professional – including a PGCE or equivalent qualification
- Experience of working in secondary school leadership in literacy pedagogy

Other organisations may call this role Programme Manager, School Improvement Project Manager, Education Project Manager, Education Programme Manager, Education Project Delivery Manager, Education Consultant, Lead Practitioner, Teacher, or Literacy Advisor.
The closing date for this role is 10am on Monday 15th April 2019.

The National Literacy Trust is committed to being an equal opportunities employer and aims to ensure that no job applicant or employee receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, ethnicity or religion.
