At UCB everything we do starts with a simple question: “How will this make a difference to the lives of people living with severe diseases?” We do that by connecting with patients and their families around the world living with the physical and social burdens of severe disease of the immune system and the central nervous system. Those connections offer new perspectives, drive innovation, and offer the hope of a new generation of therapies that will help to transform lives.

UCB have developed a novel and proprietary antibody discovery technology which is applied across our project portfolio. The technology facilitates efficient interrogation of the antibody repertoire to discover large and diverse panels of high quality antibodies, enabling the isolation of rare antibodies with desirable profiles. Selected antibodies with the required profile are subsequently engineered to produce therapeutic candidate antibodies for drug development.

Due to high current demand for molecular biology resource across a number of projects within UCB, we are looking for a high calibre candidate to support the development of antibody-based therapeutics. We are looking for a molecular biologist with at least one year of laboratory-based research experience, ideally with expertise in high throughput cloning or in the area of antibody biology.

The Research Scientist position will cover various aspects of the antibody discovery and development process, including the cloning of antibody genes, engineering antibodies for therapeutic use (antibody humanisation) and the generation of expression plasmids. In addition to molecular biology techniques, the candidate will use cell culture to express recombinant antibodies for screening.

A solid understanding of molecular biology techniques, particularly PCR and gene cloning, is essential for the role, and experience in antibody biology would be advantageous.

Primary responsibilities

Once trained and initially under supervision, the candidate will design and engineer therapeutic antibodies for projects across the portfolio, to deliver candidate molecules into development. They will use molecular biology techniques to clone and express antibodies recombinantly to provide material for the assessment of antibody activity.
The candidate will be responsible for interpreting and analysing the activity data to design further experiments, and present their work at cross-functional project team meetings.
The candidate will work flexibly across project teams to provide general molecular biology support, generating tool reagents and expression plasmids to ensure delivery of results against expected timelines.
The candidate will contribute to the development of new methodologies in antibody cloning and engineering.

Essential experience

A good life sciences degree and at least one year’s experience of molecular biology in an industrial or highly regarded academic laboratory.
Strong practical skills in molecular biology.
Solid understanding of and experience in PCR, gene cloning, plasmid construction.
Knowledge of antibody biology /structure would be advantageous.
Attention to detail and an ability to interpret and analyse data to design further experiments.
Exceptional organisational, communication and inter-personal skills.
An ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams and deliver results to timelines.
Proficient IT skills.

We can offer you an informal, friendly and open working environment. You will be exposed to a variety of projects and receive regular coaching and input from the teams you are working with.
